LUDWIG STOSSEL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Ludwig Stössel was born on February 12th, 1883 in Lockenhaus, Austria. At the age of seventeen he began performing as a stage actor and soon was performing in Germany in a number of stage productions.
It was not until much later in life at the age of forty three that he broke into the film industry and made his first movie appearance in the silent film, "In der Heimat, da gibt's ein Wiedersehn!" (1926) followed by roles in a number of other silent films in Germany such as, "Herkules Maier" (1928), "Serenissimus und die letzte Jungfrau" (1928), "Aus dem Tagebuch eines Junggesellen" (1929) and "Möblierte Zimmer" (1929).
In the 1930's he began working in sound films while still in Europe with his first role being on the film, "Skandal um Eva" (1930). Soon he added more sound film credits to his resume appearing in, "Opernredoute" (1931), "Die Koffer des Herrn O.F" (1931) and "Der Rebell" (1932).
When the Nazi's came to power in 1933, he and his family who were of Jewish heritage had to flee Germany. he returned to Austria to continue working as an actor and also appeared in more stage productions. His final film in Austria was, "Pfarrer von Kirchfeld" in 1937.
He then had to flee to Paris and eventually London when Hitler began to have even more control. In 1939 he took off for Hollywood. Soon he was adding American film credits, "Four Sons" (1940), "Underground" (1942), "Iceland" (1942), "Pride of the Yankees" (1942) starring Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Walter Brennan and Dan Duryea and "Casablanca" (1942) starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains and Paul Henreid.
Over the course of his career he would appear in over 130 television and film roles. Some of his later film appearances were in, "Hitler's Madman" (1943), "The Strange Death of Adolph Hitler" (1943), "The Climax" (1944), "Dillinger" (1945), "Temptation" (1946), "The Beginning or the End" (1947), "The Great Sinner" (1949) and "Call Me Madame" in 1953 and "G.I. Blues" (1960) starring Elvis Presley.
In addition to film work he appeared in a variety of television series such as, "Cavalcade of America", "Man with a Camera", "The Donna Reed Show", "Perry Mason", "Ramar of the Jungle", "Father Knows Best", "The Public Defender", "The Loretta Young Show", "Passport to Danger", "The Hollywood Palace" and "My Three Sons".
Ludwig Stössel passed away on January 29th, 1973 in Hollywood, California after a bad fall just fourteen days before he turned ninety. His remains were cremated and his ashes were shipped to Austria. He left behind his only wife, actress, Eleanore Stössel.
