LEX BARKER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Lex Barker was born on May 8th, 1919 with the birth name Alexander Crichlow Barker Jr. He was born in Rye, New York to parents Alexander Crichlow Barker Sr. and Marion Thornton Beals. His father worked as a contractor and later as a stockbroker.
Barker was rasied in New York City and went to school at Fessenden School and also Phillips Exeter Academy. Upon graduation he attended college at Princeton University, however, he soon left his college education for pursuit of a career in a theatrical stock company.
He received a role in a couple stage plays such as, "The Merry Wives of Windsor" (1938) and also an Orson Welles play, "Five Kings" which was not successful. Just one year later, Barker was discovered by a talent scout from Twentieth Century Fox and he was offered a film contract, however, he was underage and his parents who were against him pursing a career in acting refused to sign the contract since he was underage. However, he decided to pursue a acting career on his own and supported himself working in a steel mill snd studied engineering as well.
In 1941, Barker took a break from acting and enlisted in the United States Army where he served until he suffered an injury and was dicharged. He returned to Los Angeles to continue to pursue his acting career.
Soon after he arrived in Los Angeles, Barker got cast in his first film role on, "Doll Face" (1945) followed by various other small film roles. It was in 1949 that he finally was cast in a role that was his most memorable, "Tarzan's Magic Fountain". He starred in five Tarzan films total and will always be known as one of the best actors to fill that role. This type of role opened up many doors for his acting career portratying other herroic characters mostly in Western films.
As he entered the mid 50's, work in American films was not coming to easy to Barker so he decided to move to Europe and see if he had better luck since he was fluent in Italian, Spanish, French and a small amount of German. Barker was immediatly popular and worked on a total of over forty films in Europe.
Some of his better known work was in, "La Dolce Vita" (1960) and quite a few films based on novels such as the German film, "Frauenarzt Dr. Sibelius" The Return of Dr. Sibelius (1961) based on the Doctor Mabuse stories.
On occasion Barker would return to America to make guest appearances on various television shows, however he was so well liked in Europe that he spent the remainer of his life in Europe. Barker was even awarded the, "Bambi Award" in 1966 which was a Best Foreign Actor Award.
Throughout his lifetime, he was married a total of five times. First in 1942 to Constance Rhodes for eight years with whom he had one son and one daughter. In 1951 Barker married his 2nd wife, Arlene Dahl, an actress but they were divorced in 1952. Less then a year later, barker married his third wife, also an actress, Lana Turner and the couple were together until, July 22nd, 1957. Wife number four was Maria del Carmen whom he married in 1965 and divorced in 1972. He then mzrried a former Miss Spain, Carmen G. Cervera from 1965 to 1973. Barker was engaged to marry another actress, Karen Kondazian when only three days after his 54th birthday, Barker died of a heart attack on May 11th, 1973. His ashes were taken to his final wife Carmen Cervera.
