LEWIS STONE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Lewis Stone was born on November 15th, 1879 in Worcester, Massachusetts with the birth name Lewis Shepard Stone, born to Bertrand Stone and Philena Heald Ball. After high school he enlisted to fight in the Spanish American War and upon completing his service he decided to pursue a career as a writer.
Soon he began developing an interest in acting and after receiving a small number of film roles he again took a break from employment to serve during World War I. He then returned to acting and with ease began adding a number of film roles to his resume such as, "Don't Neglect Your Wife" (1921), "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1922), "Scaramouche" (1923), "The Lost World" (1925), and "The Patriot" (1928), a role for which he earned his first Academy Award nomination.
Now under contract with MGM more prominent roles began to come his way starring in the silent films, "A Woman of Affairs" (1928), and "Romance" (1930). He made the transition from silent films to sound with ease adding, "The Trial of Mary Dugan" (1929), "The Big House" (1930), "The Phantom of Paris" (1931), "Inspiration" (1931), "Red-Headed Woman" (1932), "The Mask of Fu Manchu" (1932), "Grand Hotel" (1932), "Bureau of Missing Persons" (1933) and "Queen Christina" (1933).
He became most well known for his portrayal of Judge James Hardy in the Mickey Rooney, "Andy Hardy" series with a total of fifteen appearances in such films as, "You're Only Young Once" (1937), "Andy Hardy's Private Secretary" (1941), "The Courtship of Andy Hardy" (1942) and "Andy Hardy's Blonde Trouble" (1944) among others.
Stone was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry and he never pursued any television work.
Lewis Stone married a total of three times throughout his lifetime, first to Florence Oakley and they had two children before this marriage came to an end. He then married Margaret Langham in 1907 and they were together until she passed away in 1910. His third and final wife was Elizabeth Hazel Wolf whom he wed in 1930 and they were together until he passed away on September 12th, 1953 in Beverly Hills, California after suffering from a heart attack after trying to get some teenagers off his property.
