LARAINE DAY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Laraine Day was born on October 13th, 1920 in Roosevelt, Utah with her birth name as Laraine Johnson. Her family was Mormon and when her family relocated to Long Beach, California she became involved in acting. Her first introduction to acting was working with the Long beach Players. After graduating from High School at Poly High in Riverside, California she decided to try and pursue a career as an actress.
Day's first film role was a minor part in, "Stella Dallas" (1937) followed by being cast in several lead roles in a variety of western films with RKO Pictures. In 1939, she was approached by MGM and asked to sign a contract with them. She was cast as the part, Mary Lamont in a number of the, "Dr. Kildare" films beginning with her first one, "Calling Dr. Kildare" (1939).
She followed this role with a number of roles in various films but never reached the level of stardom she had hoped for. She had a supporting role in the film, "My Son, My Son" (1940). "Foreign Correspondent" (1940) and "The Locket" (1946).
She also worked as a stage actress and television actress. She made her stage debut in the national tour of, "Angel Street" and "The Women" in 1973. Laraine's television appearances included, "The Ford Television Theatre" and "Lux Video Theatre". She was also an author and published a book called, "Day With the Giants" (1952) and "The America We Love" (also 1952).
Laraine Day was also very religious and involved with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was very into living the lifestyle of a Mormon. She never drank, smoked or drank anything with caffeine such as tea or coffee. She was also involved in the 1970's as the spokesperson for the Make America Better campaign in which she would travel across the country and share her views and opinions on environmental issues.
Laraine retired from acting in 1986 and devoted her free time to family and the church. She also founded an organization that helps children and women with both physical and mental disabilities called, SHARE Inc.
Laraine Day was married a total of three times throughout her lifetime. First to Ray Hendricks from May 16th, 1942 through January 20th, 1947. The couple had two adopted children together before filing for divorce. Her second marriage was to Leo Durocher from 1947 through 1960 and again having two more children. Day's third and final marriage was to Michael Grilikhes from 1961 through 2007 when he passed away and she again had two children with him as well.
Laraine Day then moved back to Utah after losing her husband and she then passed away on November 10th, 2007, just eight months later at the age of eighty seven. She is interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, California. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to the Motion Picture Industry.
