KARL MALDEN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Karl Malden was born on March 22nd, 1912 in Chicago, Illinois with the birth name Malden George Sekilovich.  His mother was Czech and his father was from Serbia and he was the oldest of three sons.  At the age of five, his family moved and raised him in the small town of Gary, Indiana where he graduated with decent grades from Emerson High School in 1931.  When he was just a teenager he joined the Karageorge Choir which was his first introduction to performing in front of an audience.

Upon completing his education he found work in a steel factory for three years, he then moved to Arkansas at the age of twenty two, and attended Arkansas State Teacher's College and then decided to go to study at Goodman Theater Dramatic School.  Once he felt he had enough training in acting he left for New York to pursue a career as an actor.

He found work with the Group Theater and by 1937 he made his stage debut and continued to work on a number of other Broadway plays such as, "All My Sons" and "A Street Car Named Desire".  He then took a brief break to serve in the military and upon completion came right back to acting and decided now was a good time to attempt a career as a film actor.

Some of his film roles were on such features as, "They Knew What They Wanted" (1940) starring the great Carole Lombard, Charles Laughton, William Gargan and Harry Carey, "13 Rue Madeleine" (1947) starring James Cagney "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951) starring Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, for which he won an Oscar for his performance, "On the Waterfront" (1954) starring Marlon Brando, Lee J. Cobb, Eva Marie Saint and Rod Steiger, "Baby Doll" (1956) starring with Carroll Baker and Eli Wallach, "Birdman of Alcatraz" (1962) starring Burt Lancaster as convict Robert Stroud, "Cheyenne Autumn" (1964) starring James Stewart, Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker, Ricardo Montalban, Gilbert Roland, Sal Mineo and Edward G. Robinson, "Nevada Smith" (1966) starring Steve McQueen and Brian Keith and his most well known role on the television series, "The Streets of San Francisco" (1972) co-starring Michael Douglas.

Along with a successful career as a stage, television and film actor, Malden also became the spokesperson for the American Express Traveler's Checks from 1968-1989.  He was also honored when he was elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which he served as for a total of five years.

Karl Malden married only once to Mona Greenberg whom he wed on December 18th, 1938 and they had two daughters together, Mila and Carla, and remained married until he passed away on July 1st, 2009 in Brentwood, California from natural causes.
