JOHN TRAVOLTA BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

John Travolta was born on with the birth name John Joseph Travolta to parents, Helen and Salvatore Travolta.  His father was at one time a semi professional American football player and his mother worked as a singer and actress.  He had six siblings and was raised in Englewood, New Jersey.  As a boy he studied drama at a local school in New York and also began taking, voice, dancing and singing lessons.

At the age of sixteen he first became involved in acting when he found work in a summer stock production musical called, “Bye Bye Birdie”.  After this experience he decided to drop out of school and move to New York City and pursue more theatrical work as well as commercial work.

After some time, Travolta felt ready to take the next step and relocate to Los Angeles, California and begin pursuing a television and film acting career.  However, after just a short while he was cast in the musical stage production of, “Grease” back in New York City.  He returned to New York and appeared on Broadway for about ten months before making the move back west again.

Some of his early television series roles were on, “The Rookies” (1972), “Emergency!” (1972), “Medical Center” and “Welcome Back, Kotter” (1975).  Along with his early television experiences he also was given the chance for a number of small film roles such as, “The Devil’s Rain” (1975) and the television movie, “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” (1976).  He met his first love on this set, Diana Hyland who sadly, passed away from cancer in 1977.

His first big film was in “Carrie” (1976) followed by his big break in 1977 in the film, “Saturday Night Fever”, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, making him the youngest to ever receive this honor.  He became very well known and a teen idol for his role as Danny Zuko in the 1978 popular musical film, “Grease” for which he also recorded a number of the soundtracks for this film.

As his career has progressed he has become a top leading actor and has appeared in such major feature films as, “Blowout” (1981), “Staying Alive” (1983), “Look Who’s Talking” (1989), “Pulp Fiction” (1994) also starring Samuel L. Jackson, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination and brought him back to top artist status followed by roles in, “Primary Colors” (1998) and “Hairspray” (2007).

Throughout his career he has received a number of honors such as being ranked #21 for the “Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time” in Empire magazine’s October 1997 issue.  Entertainment weekly voted him the 64th Greatest Movie Star of all time and TV Guide ranked him #3 on “TV’s 25 Greatest Teen Idols” in 2005.

Along with an acting career, Travolta has also worked as a musician and has released several albums. He released his first record in 1976 when he had a Top 20 hit single, "Let Her In".  John later came out with a deluxe 2-record set called, "Travolta Fever", which was released in 1978.  He has also published two books, “John Travolta Staying Fit!
