JOHN HURT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
John Hurt was born on January 22nd, 1940 in Shirebrook, Derbyshire in England with the birth name John Vincent Hurt, as the youngest of three children. His mother was Phyllis Massey an actress and his father, Arnould Herbert Hurt worked as an Engineer.
When he was only eight years old his family sent him to study at St. Michael's Preparatory School in Otford, Kent and it was during this time that he first developed an interest in acting. His family then relocated to Grimsby and enrolled him at the Grimsy Art School when he was seventeen years old as well as St. Martin's School of Art, however, Hurt's interested actually lay in the art of acting.
He was later given a chance to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and in 1962 he made his first theatrical stage appearance. That same year, Hurt was able to break intothe film industry adding such credits to his resume as, "Young and Willing" (1962), "This Is My Street" (1964) and appearances onthe television series, "Once Aboard the Lugger…", "Drama 61-67", and "First Night".
He also remained not only as a film and television actor, but also added more theatrical stage credits to his resume appearing in such productions as, "Inadmissible Evidence" (1965), "Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs" (1966), "Man and Superman" (1969), "TheCaretaker" (1974) and "The Dumb Waiter" (1974).
With quite a bit of experience to his name he remained working and gainedreal notice when he performer in the television play, "The Naked Civil Servant" (1975), a role for which he earned the Emmy and the British Television Award.
Finally, he had reached the recognition he had hoped to achieve for solong in his career and more successful roles followed such as in the television movie, "I, Claudius" (1976) and the films, "Midnight Express" (1978) co-starring Brad Davis, Irene Miracle, Bo Hopkins, Paolo Bonacelli, Paul L. Smith, Randy Quaid, Norbert Weisser, Peter Jeffrey and "The Elephant Man" (1980) also starring Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon and Freddie Jones, both roles earnedhim Oscar nominations making his a highly desirable actor in the industry.
Other successful film roles he added during this time included, "Champions"(1984) also starring Edward Woodward, Jan Francis Ben Johnson, Kirstie Alley and Alison Steadman, "The Hit" (1984), "Scandal" (1989), "Love andDeath on Long Island" (1997), "Beyond the Gates" (2005), "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008) and "An Englishman in New York" (2008).
Most recently he appeared in the stage production, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (2009) and the films, "The Absinthe Drinkers" (2012), "Snowpiercer" (2013) and "Only Lovers Left Alive" (2013).
John Hurt has married a total of four times, first in 1962 briefly to Annette Robertson. When this marriage came to an end in 1964 he then wed Donna Peacock in 1984 however by 1990 another marriage ended in divorce. His third marriage was to Jo Dalton in 1990 and they had two children together before also divorcing six years later. He is currently married to his fourth wife, Anwen Rees-Myers since 2005.
