JOHN CARRADINE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
John Carradine was born Richmond Reed Carradine on February 5th, 1906 in New York City, New York, USA. His father was a well known attorney and his mother was a surgeon. However, he did not feel the interest to follow in his parents footsteps, but instead chose a more creative profession. Beginning as an artist he worked his way traveling around the country doing portraits sketches in office buildings.
He decided in 1925 to take a shot at acting. He began with a stage career and made his debut in a production of, "Camille" (1925). He then chose to join a traveling Shakespearean stock company and made his way west.
Luckily, he was able to break in to the film industry with his first role on, "Tol'able David" (1930) where he is credited under the name, John Peter Richmond. He followed this film with another role on, "Cleopatra" (1934) however his career was not excelling until he finally signed a contract with Fox Studios and took on the stage name, John Carradine.
His first film with fox was, "Anything Goes" (1935) and his career really took off from here. He was in a total of 220 films. He mostly played the lead in "B" films and supporting roles in "A" pictures. He had roles on the following, "House of Frankenstein" (1945) followed by, "House of Dracula" (1945), "Billy the Kid versus Dracula" (1966), and others, including "Nocturna" (1978).
Some of his more memorable supporting roles in "A" films include, "Of Human Hearts" (1938), "Hitler's Madman" (1943), "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (1944), "Bluebeard" (1944), and he portrayed, Aaron, the brother of Moses in "The Ten Commandments" (1956).
Carradine also appeared in ten John Ford productions, including, "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940). He also did a large amount of stage work and appeared on Broadway. Carradine did not limit his career to stage and film either, he also was involved in some television series such as, "My Friend Irma" (1953-1954), "Captain and Kings'" (1976) as well as some television movies including, "Daughter of Mine" (1969).
The majority of films following the 1970's that Carradine worked on were of low budget and were of dubious quality and low budget and quality, however, one of his last appearances before the camera was in a small role in "Peggy Sue Got Married" (1986) and "The Tomb" (1986).
John Carradine passed away November 27th, 1988 at the age of 82 on a visit to Milan, Italy. He was married a total of four times. First to Ardanelle McCool from 1935 to 1944, then to Sonia Sorel from 1945 to 1955, followed by his third marriage to Doris Irving Rich from 1957 until she passed away in 1971. His final wife was Emily Cisneros in 1975.
