John Agar ACTOR

John Agar was born on January 31st, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois with the birth name John George Agar, born to parents, Lillian Rogers and John Agar Sr.  He was the oldest of four siblings.  He received his early years education at Harvard School for Boys in Chicago, then Lake Forest Academy in Illinois followed by graduating from Trinity-Pawling Preparatory School in Pawling, New York.
In 1942, his family relocated to Los Angeles, California and instead of attending college, he served as a sergeant with the United States Army as an Air Force Physical trainer during World War II.  In 1945 he married America's Sweetheart, Shirley Temple which brought him in the public's eye and soon he was a working actor being offered a film contract with David O. Selznick, an independent movie producer.  Throughout his six year contract with Selznick, he never actually worked on one of his films, but his services were loaned out periodically.
His film debut was in 1948 with his wife, Shirley Temple in "Fort Apache".  In 1949, after he had one child, he and Temple divorced but he continued to work as an actor. Some of his other more well known roles were in such films as "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949) starring John Wayne, Adele Mara, Forrest Taylor, James Brown, Richard Webb, Wally Cassell, Arthur Franz, Julie Bishop and Richard Jaeckel, "Fort Apache" (1948) starring alongside John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Ward Bond, Dick Foran, Victor McLaglen, Pedro Armendariz, Irene Rich, Guy Kibbee, George O'Brien, Jack Penneck and Anna Lee, "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949) also starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Joanne Dru, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., Victor McLaglen, Mildred Natwick and George O'Brien, Tom Tyler, Chief John Big Tree, "Tarantula" (1955) co-starring Leo G. Carroll and Mara Corday, "The Mole People" (1956) with Hugh Beaumont, "The Brain from Planet Arous" (1957) co-starring Joyce Meadows and Robert Fuller, "Flesh and the Spur" (1957), "The Magic Carpet" (1951) with Lucille Ball and "Journey to the Seventh Planet" (1962).
He never really reached the level of stardom that he sought after, and his divorce from Temple did not do his career any justice.  He did appear in a series of films for producer A.C. Lyles including Korean war drama, "The Young and the Brave" (1963) also starring Rory Calhoun, William Bendix, Richard Jaeckel, Richard Arlen and Manuel Padilla, followed by a couple more films with John Wayne.  He then mostly retired from the industry and supported himself working as an insurance salesman.  He did make a comeback with some roles in "Words of Jerusalem" (1995), "The Vampire Hunters Club" (2001) and his last appearance was in 2002 on "The Naked Monster" also starring Kenneth Tobey, Lori Nelson, Les Tremayne and Gloria Talbott to name a few.

Agar did appear in several television shows in the latter part of his career such as "The Loretta Young Show", "Bat Masterson", "Whirlybirds", "Perry Mason" and G.E. True Theater".
His second marriage was in 1951 to Loretta Agar and they had two children together and remained married until she passed away in 2000.  Two years later, Agar passed away from emphysema on April 7th, 2002 in Burbank, California.  His remains were buried at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
