JOANNE WOODWARD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Joanne Woodward was born on February 27th, 1930 in Thomasville, Georgia with the birth name, Joanne Gignilliat Trimmier Woodward to parents, Wade and Elinor Gignilliat Trimmier Woodward. She had one older brother. Her father was employed as an administrator in the Thomasville School system.
She was exposed to movies from a very young age and she expressed interest to her mother that she wanted to pursue a career as an actress. In the second grade her family relocated to Marietta, Georgia and she relocated once again in Junior High School following her parents divorce. As a teenager, she entered a number of local beauty pageants, but still aspired to become an actress.
After graduating from Greenville High School in South Carolina, she went on to study at Louisiana State university and earned a degree in drama. She appeared in a number of stage plays locally and then decided to relocate to New York City where she studied under the guidance of Sanford Meisner.
It was just a matter of time till she was appearing on the stage and also on a number of television productions. After she got an agent, Joan began appearing on the big screen in such films as, "Count Three and Pray" (1955) starring alongside Van Heflin and Raymond Burr and "The Silver Chalice" (1954) starring Paul Newman.
In 1957, she won her first Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film, "The Three Faces of Eve" co-starring David Wayne and Lee J. Cobb. Some of her later roles have been in, "Crisis at Central High" (1981), "Harry & Son" (1984), "The Glass Menagerie" (1987) also starring John Malkovich Karen Allen and directed by her husband Paul Newman, "Breathing Lessons" (1994) with James Garner, Joanne Woodward, Kathryn Erbe and Joyce Van Patten and her latest appearance was in 2011 in, "All the World".
She continues to make occasional theatrical performances and is involved with a number of charities. She has only been married once to actor, Paul Newman whom she married in 1958 and they have three children together. Paul Newman passed away on September 26th, 2008. Her daughter, Melissa Newman, went on to also pursue a career as an actress.
Joanne Woodward is one of six woman who has earned Best Actress nominations for performances that were directed by their own spouse. She currently has two grandchildren.
