JANET GAYNOR BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Janet Gaynor was born on October 6th, 1906 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with the birth name Laura Augusta Gainor. As a young girl, her family relocated to San Francisco, California and she finished her schooling there. After High School, Gaynor moved to Los Angeles, California and went to secretarial school. While living in Los Angeles, she decided why not give a career as an actress a try.
She was lucky enough to get some small parts in a number of films before her break on the film, "The Johnstown Flood" (1926) at the age of twenty with Fox Studio's. Her performance was well received and Hollywood took her under their wing. She was cast in a number of successful films such as, "The Shamrock Handicap" (1926), "The Blue Eagle" (1926), "The Midnight Kiss" (1926) and "The Return of Peter Grimm" (1926). Her success continued with another incredible performance in the film, "7th Heaven" (1927) followed by, "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" (1927) Due to her success in both films, she received an Academy Award for Best Actress.
After the silent film era came to an end and sound films came into play, Gaynor had no issues making the transition. Some of her later film work were role in, "A Star is Born" (1937), "The Good Earth" (1937), "The Young in Heart" (1938) and "Bernardine" (1957). She had actually chosen to retire from the film industry in 1939 when she married Hollywood costume designer, Gilbert Adrian, but only returned one time for the film, "Bernardine".
She had married two other times, first to Jesse Lydell Peck from 1929 through 1933. After her divorce from Adrian in 1959 she married Paul Gregory from 1964 through September 14th, 1984 when she passed away in Pal Springs, California from complications she suffered from an car accident she had in 1982 in which she suffered eleven broken ribs, a ruptured bladder, a broken collar bone, a bleeding kidney and a number of pelvic fractures.
