JACK HOLT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Jack Holt was born on May 31st, 1888 in New York City, New York with the birth name Charles John Holt.  His father was an Episcopal minister and Holt did his early education at Trinity School in Manhattan and then went on to the Virginia Military Institute, however due to bad behavior he was kicked out.
 
Originally he and aspirations of pursuing a career in law, however being expelled from College caused that career goal to be unattainable, therefore he took on a number of various jobs such as a railroad and civil engineer, mail delivery, mined gold and even started acting in a number of traveling stage productions.
 
While living in San Francisco, he offered to do a horse riding stunt for a film crew and the director was impressed by him, therefore offering him the part in the film.  Soon, he relocated to Los Angeles, California and began being cast in minor film roles, many as a stuntman in westerns.  Soon Universal Pictures began casting him as a star in a number of their serials.
 
In 1917, Paramount Pictures signed him to a contract and he reached a whole new level of success.  He did a number of westerns that were based on the novels of author, Zane Grey.  As the film era transitioned from silent films to Talkies, Holt had no issues adapting to the change.
 
He took a brief break from acting to serve in the United States Army during World War II at the age of fifty four and upon completing his service, Holt returned to acting.  Some of his later film roles were in such features as "They Were Expendable" (1945) starring John Wayne, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) starring Humphrey Bogart and "The Arizona Ranger" (1948).  His final film role was in "Across the Wide Missouri" (1951).   
 
His career and personal life, with his only marriage being to Margaret Woods and their three children were all on the right track.  Sadly, Jack Holt died of a unexpected heart attack on January 18th, 1951 in Sawtelle, Los Angeles.  He is buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
