Ina Balin ACTOR

Ina Balin was born on November 12th, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York with the birth name Ina Rosenberg.  Her family were all involved in the entertainment industry.  Her father, Sam was a singer, dancer and comedian and her mother was a professional dancer.
When Ina and her brother, Richard Balin were still very young, their parent's marriage ended and the children were sent to study at boarding schools.  When her mother re married for a fourth time, she took her children back and the new husband adopted both Ina and her brother.
From a young age, Ina had envisioned a career as an actress.  At the age of fifteen she had her first opportunity to work as an actress on Perry Como's television show during the 1950's.  When she was older, she enrolled at New York University and majored in drama.  At the same time, Ina also studied acting with some Actor Studio exponents and also found work during the summer performing in summer stock.
After gaining more experience as an actress she was given her first Broadway opportunity and appeared in a production of, "Compulsion" (1957) followed by a role in, "A Majority of One"  which earned her a Theatre World Award.  During this performance, a producer by the name of Carlo Ponti took notice of Ina and chose to cast her in the film, "The Black Orchid" (1958).
In 1960, Ina was honored again for her talent when she received a Golden Globe Award for, "Best Supporting Actress" for her role in the film, "From the Terrace" starring Paul Newman.  However, as her career progressed, Ina was still being offered roles in feature films but due to the male cast she worked with such as, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lewis and John Wayne amongst others, her talents were overlooked and the male actors overtook the screen.
She did keep on taking roles such as in the film, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965) and made appearances on such television series as, "Bonanza", "Mannix", "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Get Smart".
As time went on, Ina did maintain making a living in the industry but she was never able to reach the level of stardom that she wished for.  She did take on a couple more film roles such as, "The Projectionist" (1971) and "The Don Is Dead" (1973), but neither were highly successful and things began to slow down significantly career wise for Ina.
Ina Balin decided that she would take a completely different route for the remainder of her life.  She left her acting career behind and became the first woman to ever participate in a handshake tour of a South Vietnam military hospital during the late 1960's.  She became very involved in the orphanages and even adopted three children from one of the orphanages to raise on her own.  This dramatic experience was actually made into a film in 1980, and Ina Balin starred in, "The Children of An Lac".
Balin focused mainly on raising her children, but on the occasion would make guest appearances on such television series as, "Murder, She Wrote" (1984) and "As the World Turns" (1986).
Sadly, at the young age of fifty two, Ina Balin passed away in New haven, Connecticut after suffering from a rare case of pulmonary hypertension on June 20th, 1990.
