HUNTZ HALL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Huntz Hall was born on August 15th, 1919 in New York City, New York with the birth name Henry Richard Hall. He was the fourteenth of a total of sixteen children born to Joseph Patrick Hall and Mary Ellen Mullen.
At the young age of one year old he was already appearing on stage in a production of, “Thunder on the Left”. When he completed his early year’s education at a Catholic grammar school he went on to study at the Children’s School in New York.
He appeared again as a boy soprano with the Madison Square Quintette. He was also cast in a production of, “Dead End”. Soon his well known role followed after he was cast in the 1937 film, Dead End” starring Humphrey Bogart, Sylvia Sidney, Joel McCrea, Wendy Barrie, Claire Trevor, Allen Jenkins, Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Gabriel Dell, Leo Gorcey and Bernard Punsly. He was soon playing, Sach Jones in a total of 48 'Bowery Boys' entries. In total between 'Dead End Kids', 'East Side Kids' and 'The Bowery Boys' serials, Hall appeared in eighty one total.
He took a brief break from acting during World War II to join the United States Army, and upon completion, Hall returned right back to working in Hollywood. Along with working in the series, he also was seen on the big screen in a number of films such as, “A Walk in the Sun” (1945) starring Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, George Tyne, John Ireland, Lloyd Bridges, Sterling Holloway, Norman Lloyd, Herbert Rudley, Steve Brodie and Richard Benedict, with narration by Burgess Meredith.
After appearing in the film, “Valentino” (1977) starring Rudolf Nureyev, Michelle Phillips, Leslie Caron, Felicity Kendal, Seymour Cassel and Carol Kane, he was seen on stage performing in dinner theater and then in 1994, he decided to retire from the industry. Hall was very financially stable from his acting income as well as some smart oil investments he had made.
Although his professional life was quite stable, his personal life was not as simple. He had a number of small arrests on his record for drug possession, drunk driving and also losing his temper and being arrested. Also, his marriages were not so successful. He married a total of three times. His first wife was Elsie May Anderson from 1940 through 1944. He then married Leslie Wright from 1948-1953. His third wife was Leslie Hall from 1966 up until he passed away.
Just a couple years later on January 30th, 1999 he passed away from congestive heart failure in North Hollywood, California. He is survived by his one and only son, Leslie Richard who later changed his name to Gary. Hall is interred in a niche at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, California.
