Hugh Griffith ACTOR

Hugh Griffith was born on May 30th, 1912 in Marian Gras in Wales located in the United Kingdom with the middle name Emrys.  His parents were Mary and William Griffith.  After receiving his early years education at Llangefni County School he tried to enroll at college but failed the English exam.  He originally had a career in banking and worked as a teller until he won a scholarship to study acting at the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.  Upon graduating from school he chose to enlist in the Army and served for six years.
When he completed his military service he then began to pursue a career as an actor beginning with working as a stage actor.  He did a number of Shakespeare plays appearing in Stratford-Upon-Avon with the Royal Shakespeare company.
Soon, he relocated to the United States and began taking on Broadway roles with his most well known role in a production of, "Look Homeward Angel" (1957-1959).  For his performance he won a Tony Award nomination.
Along with working as a stage actor he was also making his way into films with roles on, "Dulcimer Street" (1948), "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1948) and "Ben-Hur" (1959) starring Charlton Heston, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.  
Other memorable roles followed in such films as, "Tom Jones" (1963), "Oliver!" (1968), "Start the Revolution Without Me" (1970) and "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" (1971).  In addition to film, he was also seen throughout his career on television making appearances on such shows as, "BBC2 Playhouse", "Great Mysteries", "Owen, M.D", "Playhouse 90" and "Play of the Week".
His most recent roles prior to passing were on such films as, "The Last Remake of Beau Geste" (1977), "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1978) and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square" (1979).
One year later he passed away on May 14th, 1980 in London, England after suffering from a heart attack.
