HERBERT LOM BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Herbert Lom was born on September 11th, 1917 in Prague, Bohemia with the birth name Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchacevich ze Schluderpacheru, born to parents Olga and Charles. As a youth he was very athletic and became one of the top Czecholsovakian sprinters. However, he later turned his sights on acting and began working in the film industry.
His film debut was in a Czech film called, "Žena pod kříže". He later made the move to England and appeared in a variety of British films throughout the 1940's in such films as, "The Young Mr. Pitt" (1942) starring with Robert Donat, Robert Morley and John Mills and "War and Peace" (1956) co-starring Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer, Vittorio Gassman, May Britt, John Mills, Oscar Homolka and Anita Ekberg.
After gaining experience in Europe he secured a contract in Hollywood being seen on the big screen in such films as, "Dual Alibi" (1946) with Sebastian Cabot, Phyllis Dixey and Terence de Marney, "The Ladykillers" (1955) also starring Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Peter Sellers, Danny Green, Jack Warner and Katie Johnson, "Fire Down Below" (1957) starring Rita Hayworth, Jack Lemmon, Robert Mitchum and Anthony Newley, "Spartacus" (1960) starring Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis, John Gavin, Charles Laughton, John Ireland, Woody Strode, Peter Ustinov, Laurence Olivier, Nina Foch, John Dall and Charles McGraw, "El Cid" (1961) starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren, Raf Vallone, Genevieve Page, John Fraser, Gary Raymond and Douglas Wilmer, "Mysterious Island" (1961) with Michael Craig, Joan Grenwood, Michael Callan, Dan Jackson and Gary Merrill and "The Phantom of the Opera" (1962) co-starring Heather Sears, Edward de Souza and Michael Gough.
In addition to his film work he did have one re-occurring role on the television series, "The Human Jungle" (1963-1964) which was a British television drama. He became most well known for his role as Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus in a number of, "Pink Panther" films.
Some of his more recent roles were in, "The Dead Zone" (1983) starring Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, Brooke Adams, Anthony Zerbe, Colleen Dewhurst and Tom Skerritt, "Hopscotch" (1980) starring Walter Matthau, Sam Waterston, Glenda Jackson and Ned Beatty, "Ten Little Indians" (1989) starring Donald Pleasence, Frank Stallone, Brenda Vaccaro, Warren Berlinger, Yehuda Elfroni, Paul L. Smith, Moira Lister, Sarah Maur Thorp and Neil McCarthy and "Son of the Pink Panther" (1993) with Roberto Benigni, Claudia Cardinale, Graham Stark and Burt Kwouk.
Lom is also a published writer, with two historical novels, "Enter a Spy: The Double Life of Christopher Marlowe" (1971) and "Guillotin: The Eccentric Exploits of an Early Scientist" (1992).
He married twice throughout his lifetime, his first marriage was very short to a lady by the name of Eve. When this marriage came to an end he married Dina Scheu in 1948 and they had two children before this marriage also ended in divorce in 1971.
Herbert Lom passed away on September 27, 2012 in London, England at age ninety five of natural causes.
