HENRY TRAVERS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Henry Travers was born on March 5th, 1874 in Northumberland, England with the birth name Travers John Heagerty. His career in acting began as a stage actor in England and in 1917 he relocated to the United States where he continued working as a stage actor appearing in a number of Broadway productions.
By the mid 1930's he was appearing on such films as, "Reunion in Vienna" (1933) starring John Barrymore, May Robson, Una Merkel, Frank Morgan and Diana Wynyard, "Dodge City" (1939) starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Ann Sheridan, Frank McHugh, Victor Jory, John Litel, Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams, William Lundigan, Henry O'Neill, Douglas Fowley, Ward Bond, Gloria Holden, Alan Hale Sr. and Bruce Cabot, "High Sierra" (1941) starring Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, Alan Curtis, Arthur Kennedy, Joan Leslie, Henry Hull, Jerome Cowan, Cornel Wilde, Barton MacLane, Elisabeth Risdon and Paul Harvey, "The Bells of St. Mary's" (1945) starring Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman, William Gargan, Ruth Donnelly and Rhys Williams and his most well known role, "The Yearling" (1946) starring alongside Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman, Claude Jarman, Jr., Chill Wills, Clem Bevans and Forrest Tucker, "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Frank Faylen, Gloria Grahame, Frank Albertson, Ward Bond, Jimmy Hawkins, Beulah Bondi, Thomas Mitchell, Lillian Randolph, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer, H. B. Warner, Sheldon Leonard and Stanley Andrews. He also received an Oscar nomination for his role in, "Mrs. Miniver" (1942) starring Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon, Dame May Whitty, Reginald Owen, Henry Wilcoxon and Teresa Wright.
He retired from the industry in 1949 after appearing on, "The Girl from Jones Beach" with Ronald Reagan, Virginia Mayo, Eddie Bracken, Paul Harvey and Jerome Cowan and lived with his wife in California.
Henry Travers twice throughout his lifetime, first briefly to Ann G. Murphy and when this marriage came to an end he wed Amy Forrest-Rhodes and they remained together until she passed away in 1954. He did not remarry again and passed away on October 18th, 1965 in Hollywood, California after suffering from arteriosclerosis. His remains are interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.
