HAL HOLBROOK BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Hal Holbrook was born with the birth name Harold Rowe Holbrook Jr. on February 17th, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Aileen Daenport a vaudeville dancer and Harold Rowe Holbrook Sr. He was raised for most of his childhood in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. After graduating from the Culver Academics and Deniason University he went into the acting industry with a one man show, "Mark Twain Tonight" for which he won both a Tony and a Drama Desk Award.
He then went on to join the military in the United States Army during World War II where he also performed in little theatre. Upon completing his military service he went right back to his stage career where he was seen by Ed Sullivan in 1956 and was given his first chance at national exposure on "The Ed Sullivan Show". His Mark Twain performances were making him very well known and desired in the industry.
Halbrook had the chance to perform a special production for the New York World Fair in 1964 and 1965 for the Bell Telephone Pavilion. From this step he then had the opportunity for the, "Mark Twain Tonight Show" to be presented on television by CBS where he received an Emmy for his performance.
In 1966 his show was on Broadway and again in 1977 and 2005. His show toured all over the country and reached over 2000 performances. Not only was he well known for his Mark Twain performances but he also played the role of the Major in, "Incident at Vicky" (1964) and he was also in the Broadway Production of, "Man of La Mancha" (1968).
Holbrook also worked on films such as the television movie, "That Certain Summer" (1972) which was quite controversial in that it was one of the first films to portray homosexuality without judgement. For his role on, "The Bold Ones: The Senator" (1970) a television series he won an Emmy and he also became quite popular for his role in "All the Presidents Men" (1976) starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman.
Holbrook was a amazing stage performer, television actor and film star. He even did six films all part of a conspiracy, "Fletch Lives", "Magnum Force" starring Clint Eastwood, "The Star Chamber", "Capricorn One", "All the President's Men" and "The Firm" starring Tom Cruise.
Even well into the year 2000, Holbrook was taking on new and challenging roles. He appeared in, "Men of Honor" (2000) starring Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr., followed by receiving a Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting role for his role on, "Into the Wild" (2007). Holbrook worked an another film with his wife Dixie Carter titled, "That Evening Son" in which the film received the Audience Award for Narrative Feature and he was honored with a special Lifetime Achievement Award.
Hal Holbrook married three times throughout his lifetime. First to, Ruby Holbrook on September 25th, 1945 and the couple had two children, Victoria and David. They divorced in 1965 and one year later on December 28th, 1966 he married Carol Eve Rossen. Together he had another child with Rossen, Eve. This marriage too ended in divorce on June 14th, 1983. His final marriage was to Dixie Carter on May 27th, 1984 and he remained with Carter until she passed away on April 10th, 2010.
Following his third wifes death, Halbrook signed on April 22, 2010, to portray Katey Sagal's character's father on, "Sons of Anarchy" for four episodes. His newest project in the works is playing an older version of Jacob Jankowski in the film, "Water for Elephants".
