Gloria Stuart ACTOR

Gloria Stuart was born on July 4th, 1910 in Santa Monica, California with the birth name Gloria Frances Stewart born to parents, Alice Vaughan Deidrick and Frank Stewart.  At the age of nine her father was killed in a car accident and she was raised with her mother along with her siblings.  After graduating from Santa Monica high school she took some acting classes during college at the University of California at Berkeley while also majoring in drama and philosophy, but dropped out before earning her degree and found work in some stage productions.
After gaining some experience working at the Carmel Playhouse, she began working in the film industry with Universal Pictures appearing in such features as, "The old Dark House" (1932), "The Invisible Man" (1933), "The Kiss Before the Mirror" (1933) and "Here Comes the Navy" (1934).  She then signed with 20th Century Fox, however, the films they cast her in were for the most part forgettable such as, "Gold Diggers of 1935" (1935) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938).
Stuart returned to her initial love of stage acting during the mid 1940's and then decided her time in the industry had come to an end and she chose to retire from acting.  She did entertain the troops during World War II and also opened her own small business called, D├ęcor Ltd where she engaged in the same of lamps, chests and other objects she created.
Later in life she decided to make a come back appearing in some small television roles and then in 1997 appearing in the film, "Titanic" (starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) in the role of Rose, for which she became the oldest person to ever be nominated for an Academy Award.  She also received a nomination for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.
She received a number of other honors throughout her career such as being chosen by People' magazine as, "One of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in 1998.  She was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000.  Her final appearance was in 2004 in the film, "Land of Plenty".
Throughout her lifetime she married twice.  Her first husband was Blair Gordon Newell in 1930 but this marriage came to an end just four years later.  Se then married Arthur Sheekman in 1934 and they had one daughter and remained married until he passed away at the age of seventy eight.  She did not re-marry and just a couple years later, she passed away on September 26th, 2010 in Los Angeles, California after suffering from lung cancer at the age of one hundred.  She left behind a total of twelve grandchildren.  Her remains were cremated and her ashes were placed in an urn that her family kept.
