GEORGE MACREADY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
George Macready was born on August 29th, 1899 in Providence, Rhode Island with the birth name George Peabody Macready Jr. After earning his high school diploma from Classical High, he graduated from Brown University and then found work as a New York newspaperman. He soon began to develop an interest in acting and by 1926 he made his Broadway debut in a production of, "Scarlet Letter".
As his career as an actor progressed he appeared in over 15 Broadway productions such as, "Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth", "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" and "Victoria Regina".
In the early 40's he began to also appear in a number of films some of which included, "Commandos Strike at Dawn" (1942), "The Seventh Cross" (1944), "The Mission Juror" (1944), "Counter Attack" (1945), "My Name is Julia Ross" (1945) and "Gilda" (1946) starring Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth.
In addition to his work as a stage and film actor he also added a variety of television credits to his resume such as, "Four Star Playhouse", "The Ford Television Theatre", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "The Rough Riders", "Perry Mason", "Gunsmoke", "Have Gun - Will Travel" and a five year run on, "Peyton Place" (1964-1969) starring Ryan O'Neal, Dorothy Malone, Ed Nelson, Mia Farrow, Mariette Hartley and Chris Connelly.
He never neglected taking on film roles when they came his way, however, he mostly focused on television adding over 200 appearances to his resume. Later in his career some films he worked on were, "The Green Glove" (1952), "Paths of Glory" (1957) starring Kirk Douglas, E.G. Marshall and Ralph Meeker, "Taras Bulba" (1962), "Seven Days in May" (1964), "The Great Race" (1965) starring Tony Curtis and "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970).
George Macready married only once to Elizabeth Dana Patterson in 1931 and they had three children and remained married until 1943. He never re-married and on July 2nd, 1973 he passed away in Los Angeles, California after suffering from emphysema. He donated his body to a medical school.
