GEORGE CHANDLER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
George Chandler was born on June 30th, 1898 in Waukegan, Illinois. After high school he first joined the military and served during World War I. Upon completing his service Chandler then went on to study ay the University of Illinois.
During his college years he also performed as a violinist with a jazz band to help support him financially. Chandler later chose to work as a vaudeville performer and by 1928 he had broken into the film industry.
Some of his early roles were in such two-reel comedies as, "Red Romance" (1929) starring with Regina Doyle and Wilbur Mack and "A Daring Dude" (1929), "The Fatal Glass of Beer" (1933) starring W.C. Fields and "The Power and the Glory" (1933).
Over the course of his career in entertainment he would add over 400 roles to his credits. As he continued working as an actor, he began to take on more substantial film roles such as, "Roxie Hart" (1942), "Race Street" (1948), "Sons of Adventure" (1948), "The Girl Rush" (1955) and "Every Which Way But Loose (1978) starring Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis and Ruth Gordon.
Along with film work he also appeared on a variety of television series such as, "Space Patrol" (1951), "Lassie" (1954), "Twilight Zone", "The Adventures of Kit Carson", "Bonanza", "Ironside", "The Virginian", "Gunsmoke", "Love, American Style", "Shotgun Slade", "The Public Defender", "Frontier", "It's a Great Life" and "Wagon Train" "The Lone Ranger" and "Laredo".
Chandler also served as President of the Screen Actors Guild between 1960 and 1963. His final acting role was in 1979 on the television series, "Lou Grant".
George Chandler married only once to Catherine Ward in 1935 and they had three children together before the marriage came to an end. He did not re-marry and on June 10th, 1985 he passed away at the age of eighty six, in Panorama city, California after suffering from complications with cancer.
