GEORG STANFORD BROWN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Georg Stanford Brown was born June 24, 1943 in Havana, Cuba. When he was seven years old, his family relocated to Harlem in New York City. He dropped out of high school, and at age seventeen passed the college entrance exam so that he could go to Los Angeles and attend L.A. City College’s theater program. Brown enjoyed the program so much that he took his studies even further to New York for their American Musical and Dramatic Academy. After he found parts in various theatrical plays, he decided to move back to Hollywood to find work in film and TV. His first role was a bit part in “How to Steal a Million” (1966), and his first credited part was in “The Comedians” (1967).
Brown began appearing on television in 1968 on “Dragnet 1967” starring Jack Webb and Harry Morgan, and would continue for years to come. He also persisted in film acting, taking bigger roles in movies like “Bullitt” (1968) starring Steve McQueen and “Colossus: The Forbin Project” (1971). In 1972 he was cast as Officer Terry Webster on the police drama “The Rookies” (1972-76). For a few of the episodes, he even served as director. After, he began to favor the behind-the-camera work. Brown next directed forty more television shows and movies, including “Charlie’s Angels” (1977-79), “Magnum, P.I.” (1984) starring Tom Selleck, “Hill Street Blues” (1981-86), and more recently, the made for TV films “The Long Shot” (2004), “Wedding Daze” (2004), and “The Reading Room” (2005). In 1981, he earned his only Emmy for directing the episode “Parting Shots” for the program “Cagney and Lacey” (1981), which featured his then wife, Tyne Daly, whom he married in 1966 and divorced in 1990.
Brown did, however, still act in movies and on TV while pursuing his directorial career. He appeared on television in shows like “Matlock” (1987-89) starring Andy Griffith, “Nip/Tuck” (2004), and “Judging Amy” (2005), as well as pictures such as “Stir Crazy” (1980), “House Party 2” (1991), and his final feature film, “Cuban Blood” (2003). The actor’s last effort was the television movie “The Reading Room” (2005).
