FRED 'SNOWFLAKE' TOONES BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Fred 'Snowflake' Toones was born on January 5th, 1906 in North Carolina.  Over the course of his career as a character actor, he added over 200 credits to his resume. 

He began with appearing on a number of films in un-credited roles such as, "Ladies' Night in a Turkish Bath" (1928) with Dorothy Mackaill, Jack Mulhall and Sylvia Ashton, "The Galloping Ghost" (1931) starring Harold 'Red' Grange, Dorothy Gulliver, Tom Dugan, Gwen Lee, Tom London, Yakima Canutt, Stepin Fetchit, Lon Chaney Jr. and Ralph Bushman, and "A Private Scandal" (1931) with Marian Nixon, Lloyd Hughes and Theodor Von Eltz.  His first credit role was in, "Human Targets" (1932) with Buzz Barton, Francis X. Bushman Jr. and Pauline Parker. 

Soon he began appearing in more films such as, "I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang" (1932) starring Paul Muni, Glenda Farrell, Preston Foster, Allen Jenkins, Sally Blane, Robert Warwick and Helen Vinson, "The Hurricane Express" (1932) starring John Wayne, Al Bridge, Al Ferguson, Shirley Grey, Tully Marshall, Glenn Strange, Charles King, Lloyd Whitlock, J. Farrell MacDonald and Conway Tearle, where he portrayed a porter.  Interestingly, over the course of his acting career, he would be cast as a porter in about fifty films.  He was an example of racial stereotyping in Hollywood also being cast in other servant roles such as a butler, bartender, cook, bellhop or doorman.

He developed the nickname 'Snowflake' early on in his career.  He gave himself this name and used it as his character name.  Other credits he added included, "Woman Haters" (1934) the first short subject starring American slapstick comedy team the Three Stooges - Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Curly Joe Howard, Marjorie White, Walter Brennan, Bud Jamison and Monte Collins, "Mississippi" (1935) starring Bing Crosby, W.C. Fields, Queenie Smith, Gail Patrick, Edward Pawley, John Miljan, Fred Kohler and Joan Bennett, "The Lawless Nineties" (1936) starring John Wayne, Ann Rutherford, George 'Gabby' Hayes, Lane Chandler, Al Bridge, Harry Woods and Etta McDaniel, "Way Out West" (1937) starring Laurel and Hardy with Stanley Fields, James Finlayson and Rosina Lawrence, "Hawk of the Wilderness" (1938) starring Herman Brix, Ray Mala, Tom Chatterton, Monte Blue, Jill Martin, George Eldredge, Dick Wessel and Noble Johnson, "Daredevils of the Red Circle" (1939) starring Charles Quigley, David Sharpe, Herman Brix, Charles Middleton, Carole Landis, C. Montague Shaw and Raymond Bailey and Miles Mander, "The Palm Beach Story" (1942) starring Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea, Mary Astor, Victor Potel, William Demarest, Robert Warwick, Franklin Pangborn and Rudy Vallee and "Fools Gold" (1947) starring with William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy, Andy Clyde, Rand Brooks, Jane Alexander, Robert Emmett Keane and Earle Hodgins.
 
Although, he was cast in over 200 films, he was actually only given credit for 73 of his roles.  Many films he appeared in were such small roles that he was never really given the chance to show his true talent as an actor.
 
However, Toones made a decent living in Hollywood and after working in films he made one final appearance in 1951 on his only television series role in, "Racket Squad".  He then passed away just a couple years later on February 13th, 1962 in Los Angeles, California.
