FRANK MORGAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Frank Morgan was born on June 1st, 1890 in New York City, New York with the birth name Francis Philip Wuppermann. He was one of eleven children born into a wealthy family. His older brother, Ralph also went on to pursue a career as an actor. Morgan first became involved in entertaining would he would sing at his local church.
Before pursuing a career in acting he supported himself with such jobs as selling toothbrushes and soliciting advertisements. It was just a matter of time before he found his true calling and began working as a stage actor. In 1914 he had his Broadway debut.
His first film role came just two years after he appeared on stage in the film, "The Suspect" (1916) followed by roles in such films as, "A Child of Wild" (1917) and "The Knife" (1918). When the film industry transitioned from silent to 'talkies', Morgan made the change with ease.
For his role in the film, "The Affairs of Cellini" (1934) he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and another nomination for his role in the film, "Tortilla Flat" (1942). He is also very well remembered for one of his most famous roles in, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) portraying the lead character, "Professor Marvel".
Morgan continued to appear in a number of films throughout his career with some of the more memorable roles being in, "The Great Ziegfeld" (1936), "The Mortal Storm" (1940), "The White Cliffs of Dover" (1944) and his final film role was in, "Key to the City" (1950).
He was also an avid boater and owner of a huge cattle ranch in California. He also owned a number of yachts. Morgan also recorded children's books and was awarded two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry as well as for Radio.
Morgan married only once to Alma Muller in 1914 and they had one son, George Morgan and remained together until he passed away on September 18th, 1949 in Beverly Hills, California after he suffered a fatal heart attack while sleeping. His remains are interred at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
