FRANK GORSHIN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Frank Gorshin was born on April 5th, 1933 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to a father who was employed as a railroad worker and his mother was employed as a seamstress. While he was enrolled in High School, Frank found part time work as an usher at the Sheridan Square Theatre and began to develop an interest in acting.
He enjoyed doing impressions and entered a talent contest using his skills which he won and was therefore given a chance for a one week gig at a night club called Jackie Heller's Carousel night club. He finally got himself a paid job and this was his first step towards his career in entertainment.
When he was nineteen years old, he took a brief break from acting to join the United States Army, however instead of fighting in the Army he actually worked as an entertainer for them. After he performed with the Army for two years he had the chance to meet a Hollywood agent and got his first role in the film, "The Proud and Profane" (1956) followed by a number of television drama roles.
When he went on a vacation to visit his family he received a call from his agent that he needed to return to Hollywood right away for a screen test, instead of flying he decided to make the drive across country and was in a car accident. He was admitted to the hospital and media reports said he was killed, therefore the part for the film went to another actor. It turned out, Gorshin was just injured and returned to Hollywood not getting cast in that film.
He did however, continue to work in the industry receiving roles on a number of other films such as, "Hot Rod Girl" (1956), "Invasion of the Saucer Men" (1957), "Dragstrip Girl" 91957) and "Bells Are Ringing" (1960).
Alongside his film career, he was now being offered jobs in various Hollywood nightclubs as well as Las Vegas Showrooms. He was also making a number of guest appearances on a variety of television shows such as, "The Ed Sullivan Show" (1948) and he played the character, the Riddler from the Batman series on the film, "Batman" (1966) for which he earned and Emmy nomination from the television version. This was followed by another Emmy nomination when he appeared on an episode of, "Star Trek" (1966).
Along with his film, television and nightclub performances he also made his Broadway debut in 1970 in the play, "Jimmy" and received excellent reviews for his performance. In total Gorshin has appeared in over 70 films and made over forty television appearances. His final appearance was in, "CSI" (2000).
He was also an active member serving as Honorary Chairman of the Entertainment Division for the American Heart Association. He only married once to Christina Randazzo in 1957 and they remained happily married having one child together until he passed away on May 17th, 2005 in Burbank, California from lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia. Frank was buried in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in a family plot at the Roman Catholic Calvary Cemetery in the Hazelwood section of Pittsburgh.
Frank Gorshin was considered one of the top impressionists in Hollywood and he will always be remembered for his most famous acting role was as The Riddler in the Batman live action television series.
