FERNANDO LAMAS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY
Fernando Lamas was born on January 9th, 1915 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During his early years, he studied drama in school and later chose to enroll in college and study law. He was also very athletic and decided to leave school and he excelled in horse riding, fencing and boxing. Soon he was making appearances on stage, radio and then at the age of twenty four he appeared in his first film in Argentina.
After some time of working in movies in his home country, he became one of Argentina's established movie stars by 1942. Soon he made his way to Hollywood and signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayar in 1951.
He began working in the United States mostly portraying Latin lover roles. Some of his early film roles were in such features as, "The Merry Widow" (1952), "Dangerous When Wet" (1953), "Sangaree" (1953) and "Jivaro" (1954).
He also worked as a stage actor in American and was nominated for a Tony Award for best actor, for his role in the stage production of, "Happy Hunting" which was a Broadway production.
Lamas also worked in the other side of the industry as a director with the Spanish film, "La Fuente Magica" in 1962 which he also starred in along with his wife, actress, Esther Williams. Other projects he directed throughout his career in entertainment were, "Mannix" (1967), "Alias Smith and Jones" (1971), 'The Rookies" (1972) and "House Calls" (1979).
He then focused the remainder of his career as a television actor appearing in, "Climax!" (1958), "Zane Grey Theatre" (1959-1960), "The Girl from U.N.C.L.E." (1966-1967), "The Red Skelton Hour" (1964-1967), "The Virginian" (1965) and "Burke's Law" (1964-1965). His final appearance was in the television movie, "The Dream Merchants" (1980).
Lamas was married four times. His first wife was Perla Mux from 1940 through 1944. He then married Lydia Barachi in 1946 and they divorced in 1952. He chose to marry for a third time to actress, Arlene Dahl in 1954 and this marriage also ended in divorce in 1960. His fourth and final wife was Esther Williams from 1969 through his death on October 8th, 1982 where he passed away at the age of sixty seven, from pancreatic cancer in Los Angeles, California. He had a total of two daughters and one son, actor Lorenzo Lamas. His ashes were scattered into the ocean.
