EVELYN KEYES BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Evelyn Keyes was born on November 20th, 1916 in Port Arthur, Texas with the middle name Louise. Her parents were Omar Dow and Maude Ollive Keyes. At the age of three, her father passed away and her mother relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, with her three sisters and one brother. As a teen girl she studied dance, voice and piano and by the age of eighteen she was working as a chorus girl.
Soon, Keyes was signed to a contract with Cecil B. DeMille and was being cast in a number of small films such as, "The Buccaneer" (1938) and "Union Pacific" (1939). She soon was cast in what was her most popular role in the film, "Gone with the Wind" (1939) portraying, Suellen O'Hara.
After the success of this film, she was then signed to a contract with Columbia Pictures and was appearing on the big screen in such films as, "Before I Hang" (1940), "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941), "The Face Behind the Mask" (1941), "A Thousand and One Nights" (1945), "The Jolson Story" (1946), "Mrs. Mike" (1949), "The Prowler" (1951), "99 River Street" (1953) and "The Seven Year Itch" (1955) starring Marilyn Monroe.
For the most part she retired from the film industry but chose to make occasional stage appearances in such productions as, "I Am a Camera" (1953) and "No, No, Nanette". She also made occasional guest appearances on such television series as, "The Love Boat", "Murder, She Wrote" and "Lux Video Theater".
Throughout her lifetime she had numerous relationships and a total of four marriages. She first married Barton Oliver Bainbridge in 1938 and they were together until he committed suicide in 1940. She then wed director, Charles Vidor in 1943 but this marriage ended just two years later. Her third time to marry was to actor, John Huston in 1946 and by 1950 this marriage also had come to an end. Her fourth husband was a band leader, Artie Shaw from 1957 through 1985. She has one adopted son from Mexico but was never able to have any children of her own after she had to undergo an abortion prior to filming "Gone With the Wind".
Along with her lengthy acting career she was also a writer and published a novel later in life titled, "I Am a Billboard". Keyes passed away at the age of ninety one, from uterine cancer on July 4th, 2008 in Montecito, California.
