ERNEST BORGNINE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Ernest Borgnine was born in Hamden, Connecticut on January 24th, 1917 with the birth name Ermes Effron Borgnine to parents Anna Boselli and Camillo Borgnino both immigrants from Italy. His parents briefly separated when he was only two years old causing his mom to take him and move back to Italy, however in 1923, his parents got back together and they moved back to North Haven, Connecticut.
Borgnine attended public school and was very into variety of sports. As a youth he showed no real interest in any type of performing arts. Once he completed high school, he was unsure of what type of direction to take his life so he joined the Navy and served for ten years. Ernest then found work in a couple factory jobs before following the advice of his mother that he had the type of personality that could pursue a career as an actor.
He enrolled at the Randall School of Drama in Harford and after completing his studies he joined the famous Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. He worked their as a stage actor for four years and also did odd jobs for the Theatre.
In 1949, he made his Broadway acting debut in the play, "Harvey". He soon decided to relocate to Los Angeles and attempt a career in the film industry. His film debut was in, "The Whistle at Eaton Falls" (1951) starring Lloyd Bridges, Dorothy Gish, Carleton Carpenter, Anne Francis and Murray Hamilton. Following this role his big break into films came with the role in, "From Here to Eternity" (1953) with an all star cast such as Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Burt Lancaster, Donna Reed and Jack Warden. It was this film that lead to a number of different roles in a variety of films such as, "Marty" (1955) in which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Throughout the 1950's and 1960's he worked on a number of films as well as television shows such as, "The Catered Affair" (1956) starring Bette Davis, Barry Fitzgerald, Debbie Reynolds and Rod Taylor, "Jubal" also (1956) starring with Glenn Ford, Rod Steiger, Valerie French, Jack Elam, Charles Bronson and Felicia Farr, "The Flight of the Phoenix" (1965) starring James Stewart, Peter Finch, Richard Attenborough, George Kennedy, Hardy Kruger and Dan Duryea, "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) starring Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Richard Jaeckel, George Kennedy, Jim Brown, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, John Cassavetes, Clint Walker and Ralph Meeker and "The Wild Bunch" (1969) starring with William Holden, Warren Oates, Robert Ryan and Edmond O'Brien and on the popular television series, "McHale's Navy" (1962) co-starring Tim Conway. His career spanned over six decades and his best work was in the late 90's with voice roles in such films as, "Small Soldiers" (1998) and he earned an Emmy nomination at the age of ninety two for his work on the television series, "ER".
In 1972 Borgnine starred in an Irwin Allen Action/disaster fim "The Poseidon Adventure" alongside an acclaimed cast such as Shelley Winters, who received a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Best Supporting Actress, Gene Hackman, Stella Stevens, Jack Albertson, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Leslie Nielsen and Arthur O'Connell.
Ernest portrayed Dominic Santini in "Airwolf" (1984-1986) opposite Jan-Michael Vincent as action helicopter pilots in an espionage/spy tv series with a Cold War theme.
Ernest Borgnine married a total of five times. First he wed Rhoda Kemins from 1949 through 1958 and together they had one child. His second marriage was to actress Katy Jurado from 1959 through 1963. Marriage number three was to Ethel Merman from June 1964 for only one month divorcing in July 1964. His fourth marriage was to Donna Rancourt from 1965 through 1972 and he had another three children. Again, Borgnine chose to marry for a fifth time to Tova Borginne from February 24th, 1973 and the couple remains together today and they reside in Beverly Hills, California. His current wife owns a cosmetic company.
When Borgnine is not working as an actor he spends his free time assisting his wife, and also travels throughout the country supporting a number of charities and speaking at benefits. Alongside his highly successful acting career he has also been honored with a number of Awards. He has received several doctorates from various colleges across the United States and a number of Lifetime Achievement Awards.
In 1996, Borgnine was also inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. In 2007 he received California's highest civilian honor, the California Medal for a lifetime of exceptional service. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Motion Picture Industry and scheduled in 2011, Borgnine will be honored with the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.
Acclaimed Television and Film actor and World War II Navy veteran Ernest Borgnine, who won an Academy Award for his role as a lovelorn butcher in the movie "Marty" (1955), passed away at age 95 on July 8, 2012, he will surely be missed by his millions of adoring fans.
