Elvis Presley ACTOR

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi to parents Vernon and Gladys.  He was born as a twin to brother, Jessie Garon who was a still born baby, therefore, Presley was an only child.   He was raised in Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Humes High School in 1953 where he was on the school boxing team.
Elvis came from a good family background with loving, caring parents who even though were both unemployed, and lived in welfare, did everything in their power to create a good life for Elvis.  He was highly influenced by various types of music as a young boy.  He attended the Assembly of God Church and was greatly affected by the music in church and by black bluesmen in his community.
In 1947, Elvis's his mother bought him a guitar and he begins playing and performing for the local community.  He was also a regular at the downtown white and black gospel sings.  Elvis began singing locally as the "Hillbilly Cat".
Elvis began his singing career with Sun Records label in Memphis in 1954 recording a disc with two songs, "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartache Begins" and then in 1955 his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor.  With his first single for RCA, "Heartbreak Hotel", Elvis Presley got his first number one hit which was #1 on Billboard's country chart for 17 weeks and was the #1 country song of 1956.  He was widely accepted by the younger generation for his talents, good looks, sensuality, charisma and impressive dance moves.  After Liberace saw Elvis in concert, he suggested Elvis add flashy clothing to his wardrobe to grab more attention and Elvis gladly took his new friends advice.
He recorded four films in the 50's, "Love Me Tender" (1956) also starring Richard Egan, Debra Paget, James Drury, Robert Middleton, William Campbell and Neville Brand, "Loving You" (1957) starring with Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey, "Jailhouse Rock" (1958) also starring Judy Tyler, Mickey Shaughnessy, Vaughn Taylor, Dean Jones and Jennifer Holden and "King Creole" (1960) starring alongside Walter Matthau, Carolyn Jones, Dolores Hart, Dean Jagger and Vic Morrow, one of his more well known motion pictures which he received the best reviews for his acting career out of all the films he ever starred in.  His television debut was on the regionally telecast, "Louisiana Hayride" (1955) in Shreveport, Louisiana.  "Jailhouse Rock" was the first ever music video.
On March 24th, 1958 Elvis is inducted into the U.S. Army at the Memphis Draft Board. and received his basic training at Fort Hood Texas where he was then stationed for the next six months.  On his first leave he was able to continue his career with a recording session and when he returned back to service he received word in August that his mother had fallen ill to hepatitis.  He returned home to Memphis on emergency leave and on August 14th, 1958 he loses his mother Gladys at 46 years of age whom is laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery.  Elvis was deeply saddened by the loss of his mother, however 2 weeks later he was obligated to return back to Fort Hood.
In October, 1958 Elvis was moved to Germany where hew would remain stationed in Friedberg for the next eighteen months.  While in Germany, Elvis me Priscilla Ann Beaulieu, step daughter of Captain Joseph Beaulieu at a dinner party at Elvis's home.

Upon completion of military service, Elvis went straight back to pursuing his career.  He was a guest star on the Frank Sinatra Television show and together, they performed a duet, "Love Me Tender".  Elvis also continued with his acting career making about an average of three films per year.  He was then extended a contract with MGM for four additional movies, one being, "Spinout" (1966), his 22nd motion picture featuring Shelley Fabares, Diane McBain, Deborah Walley and Carl Betz
He also continued to further his musical career and on May 25th, 1966 he met with his new recording producer, Felton Jarvis and began work on his next album, "How Great Thou Art" followed by recording and shooting, "Double Trouble" (1966).  "How Great Though Art" earned Elvis the Grammy Award for Best Sacred Performance from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.  RCA also decided they wanted to extend Elvis's contract until 1974.  By the end of 1966, Elvis was the 10th highest paid star of the year.
On May 1st, 1967 Elvis married Priscilla Ann in Las Vegas and in November they purchased their first home in Beverly Hills, California.  A year later they had a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, born, Thursday, February 1st, 1968.  1967 was the only year Elvis failed to have a single in the Billboard Pop Top 20 during his recording career with RCA records.
The 70's were a big year for Elvis.  Elvis attended a press conference at the Houston Astrodome and performed six shows that attracted over 207,494 audience members and he also met with President Richard Nixon on December 21st, 1970 after sending Nixon a six page letter suggesting that he be made a, "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.  His single, "The Wonder of You" is released and reaches #9 on the charts.  For the first time since 1957, Elvis takes his show back on the road with a nine city tour which is a hit.  Then on January 16th, 1971 Elvis attended a awards banquet where he is named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce.  This was one of Elvis's most cherished moments in his lifetime.

From 1972 to 1976, Elvis lived with Linda Thompson a former "Miss Tennessee," actress and songwriter, making Thompson the only other significant romantic relationship that Elvis ever had besides Priscilla.

"Way Down" (1977) was the #1 song on Billboard magazines country singles chart the week Elvis passed away.  Nine other songs would go to #1 on Billboard's country charts between 1956 and 1981: "I Forgot to Remember to Forget," "Heartbreak Hotel," "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," and the two-sided #1 hit "Hound Dog and Don't Be Cruel" (all 1956); "All Shook Up," "Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear" and "Jailhouse Rock" (all 1957); "Moody Blue" (1977); and "Guitar Man" (1981) which was a remixed version released more than three years after his death.  Majority of his 1950s #1 country hits were also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well.

Majority of the films he starred in were not critically acclaimed, although he received good reviews for, "Flaming Star" (1960) also starring Barbara Eden, Steve Forrest, Dolores del Rio and John McIntire and "King Creole" (1958), however "Wild in the Country" (1961) co-starring Hope Lange, Millie Perkins and Tuesday Weld failed to make back the money invested into creating the film.

On June 7th, 1982, Graceland opened to the public which is a home Elvis had purchased on Tuesday, March 19th, 1957 from Mrs. Ruth Brown Moore for $102,500.  The mansion consists of 23 rooms and 13.7 surrounding acres.  The Music Gates were installed in April of 1957.  The name "Graceland" came with the mansion, from the days while the mansion, was a church, originally.  This is the 2nd highest ranked tourist home visited in America with the White House being #1.

Throughout his lifetime, he starred in 33 successful films and sold over one billion records which earned him gold, platinum and multi platinum awards.  In addition, Elvis earned 14 Grammy nominations of which he won three from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. He  was also one of the performers featured on a set of stamps of rock and blues legends issued by the U.S. Postal Service in June 1993.  He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his recognition in film and music.  In 1984, record sales topped one billion worldwide and two years later Elvis is inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, followed by a 1998 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame and finally in 2001 inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame.

The very last song Elvis Presley sang in public was, "Can't Help Falling In Love" on June 26th, 1977 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana, less then two months later, Elvis passed away at his Memphis home, Graceland on August 16th, 1977.  His autopsy detected ten different drugs in his bloodstream.  Elvis's body was placed in a family crypt in Memphis on Thursday, August 18th, 1977 and later approval from the Memphis Adjustment Board was given to allow re-interment of Elvis's and his mother Gladys's bodies to be relocated to the Meditation Garden behind Graceland due to an attempted body snatching by three men eleven days after Elvis was buried.

Elvis Presley was always known as a very generous and charitable person.  It is said that he gave away many of his own possessions as gifts to those family or friends whom admired something of his.  Presley Place was opened in July 2001, funded by Presley Charitable Foundations which shelters homeless families until they can make it financially on their own.  One example of his generosity is a story from 1975 where a poor Memphis woman was given an electric wheel chair personally from Elvis and he also gave her daughter his car and the girls boyfriend a job.  He enjoyed being able to help others in need always remembering his childhood and background.
Long after his passing, Elvis Presley is one of the most talked about stars of all times.  He topped the Forbes list of deceased highest earners for the fourth consecutive year, with earnings of $45 million in the year 2004 and it was estimated that throughout his lifetime he earned 4.5 billion.  Elvis remains more popular today and his memory will never be forgotten.

Elvis Presley, The "King of Rock and Roll" was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 8, 1960 located at 6777 Hollywood Blvd.
