EDWARD PLATT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Edward Platt was born on February 14th, 1916 in Staten Island, New York with the birth name Edward Cuthbert Platt. He received his early years education at a private school called Northwood in Lake Placid. After earning his high school diploma he enrolled at Princeton University and majored in romantic languages, however prior to earning his degree there he left to study at the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and later moved again to study at Juilliard School of Music.
Platt then began performing as a vocalist with Paul Whiteman and Orchestra and later he performed with the Mozart Opera Company located in New York City. Platt then took a break from pursuing his show business career during World War II where he served with the army as a radio operator.
Upon completing his military service he found work in radio and also began appearing in a number of musical stage productions. Soon he was also adding a number of Broadway credits to his resume such as, "Allegro" and "The Shrike".
After gaining some more stage experience, Platt then relocated to Hollywood and decided to try and make it as a film actor. By the mid 1950's he was appearing in such features as, "The Shrike" (1955) starring Jose Ferrer, June Allyson, Herbie Faye and Joy Page, "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) starring James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, Jim Backus, Ann Doran, Nick Adams, Dennis Hopper, Rochelle Hudson, Corey Allen and William Hopper, "Illegal" (1955) co-starring Edward G. Robinson, Nina Foch, Hugh Marlowe, Albert Dekker, Jan Merlin, Ellen Corby, Howard St. John, Addison Richards, Lawrence Dobkin and Jayne Mansfield and "The Lieutenant Wore Skirts" (1956) also starring Tom Ewell, Sheree North, Rick Jason, Gregory Walcott, Les Tremayne and Rita Moreno.
Along with appearing in films he also began to make quite a name for himself as a television actor adding such credits as, "Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal", "Four Star Playhouse", "Gunsmoke", "Wagon Train", "Studio 57", "Sheriff of Cochise", "The Loretta Young Show", "Bat Masterson", "The Lawless Years", "Big Town" and "Cavalcade of America".
He is most remembered for his role as 'Chief' on Don Adams' television series, "Get Smart" (1965). Other well known roles included the films, "North by Northwest" (1959) starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Martin Landau, Leo G. Carroll and Jessica Royce Landis, "A Ticklish Affair" (1963) starring with Shirley Jones, Gig Young, Edgar Buchanan, Red Buttons and Carolyn Jones and "Bullet for a Badman" (1964) starring alongside Audie Murphy, Darren McGavin, Skip Homeier, George Tobias, Beverly Owen, Ruta Lee, Mort Mills and Alan Hale Jr.
In addition to his career as an actor he was also given the chance to work on the other side of the industry as a producer with such projects as the film, "Santee" (1973) starring Glenn Ford, Dana Wynter, Jay Silverheels, Robert J. Wilke and Michael Burns.
Additional television series he appeared in over the course of his career as an actor included, "Bonanza", "Perry Mason", "Rawhide", "The Outer Limits", "The Twilight Zone", "The Governor & J.J.", "Petticoat Junction", "Bewitched', "Love, American Style", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Burke's Law", "Zane Grey Theatre", "One Step Beyond", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The Odd Couple", "Oscar's New Life" and his last television appearances was in 1974 on, "Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law".
Edward Platt married Suzanne Belcher in 1954 and they had three children together and remained married until he passed away after committing suicide at the age of fifty eight, in Santa Monica, California on March 19th, 1974. He was married once before and has another child from that short marriage. His remains were cremated and scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
