EDGAR BUCHANAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Edgar Buchanan was born on March 20th, 1903 in Humansville, Missouri with the birth name William Edgar Buchanan. When he was seven years old his family relocated to live in Oregon. Edgar attended college at the University of Oregon and pursued a career as a dentist like his fathers profession.
From 1929 to 1937, Buchanan worked as an oral surgeon in Eugene Oregon and then relocated his private practice to Atlanta, Georgia. During his free time he joined the Pasadena Community Playhouse and by the age of thirty six, he gave up his career as a dentist in pursuit of a career in the entertainment industry.
He made his film debut in 1939 on, "My Son is Guilty" and this role followed with over one hundred film roles such as, "Penny Serenade" (1941), "The Man From Colorado" (1948) starring Glenn Ford and William Holden, "The Big Trees" (1952) starring Kirk Douglas, "Ride The High Country" (1962) starring Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott, "Move Over Darling" (1962) and "McLintock! (1963) starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Chill Wills, Yvonne De Carlo, Gordon Jones and Jerry Van Dyke, to name a few.
He was also very involved as a television actor beginning with work alongside William Boyd on the popular, "Hopalong Cassidy" series. Edgar also appeared on "Bat Masterson", The Rifleman", "Make Room for Daddy", "The Adventures of Jim Bowie", "Climax!" and "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. He is most known by many for his roles on, "Judge Roy Bean" (1956), "Petticoat Junction" (1963) and "Cade's County" (1971) co-starring Glenn Ford. "Petticoat Junction" ran for seven years total and 222 episodes in which he portrayed the character, Uncle Joe Carson. This same character was again portrayed by him on three episodes of, "The Beverly Hillbillies" and on seventeen episodes of, "Green Acres".
He worked with another famous actor, Glenn Ford in thirteen different productions. His final movie role was on "Benjii" (1974) which he was reunited with the god star who he first worked with on the "Petticoat Junction".
Edgar Buchanan was only married one time to Mildred Marguerite Spence whom he married on April 14th, 1928 and they were together until he passed away on April 4th, 1979 in Palm Desert, California from a stroke that was complicated by pneumonia. He was interred in the Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
