DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS JR. BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was born on December 9th, 1909 in New York City, New York with the birth name Douglas Elton Ulman Fairbanks Junior to parents Douglas Fairbanks and Beth Sully. His parents divorced when he was only nine years old and he was an only child who was raised by his mother in California, Paris, London and New York. Both of his parents did remarry, however, neither had any more children.
He was a very athletic child and also excelled academically. As he got older he was enrolled at the Military Academy in 1919. His father was a famous actor and he always wanted to live up to that same level of popularity and success.
He had always had an interest in arts, especially as a painter and sculptor. He also was highly intelligent and used that to his benefit to work in the field of business such as mining, hotel management and even owned a couple bowling alleys.
As a child he already had some exposure to the film industry since by the age of thirteen he had already appeared on the big screen in, "Stephen Steps Out" (1923) with Paramount Pictures who had signed him to a contract. He followed with a number of other film roles during the late 20's and early 30's such as, "Stella Dallas" (1925), "Little Caesar" (1931), "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1937) and "Gunga Din" (1939).
He took a break from working during World War II to head up London's Douglas Hospital and then becoming a lieutenant in the navy soon being promoted to rank of captain in 1954.
After he finished his service to the military he returned to the big screen appearing in 1981 in, "Ghost Story" and then from the most part he retired from the industry. In total he appeared in over 100 films and television shows.
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. married a total of three times throughout his lifetime. His first wife was Joan Crawford whom he wed in 1929 and they later divorced in 1933. He then married, Mary Lee Eppling on April 22nd, 1939 and they had three daughters before she passed away in 1988. His third marriage was to Vera Shelton in 1991 and they were together until he passed away at the age of ninety from a heart attack, on May 7th, 2000. He is interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in same crypt with father, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.
