Donald Sutherland ACTOR

Donald Sutherland was born on July 17th, 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick in Canada with the middle name McNichol, born to parents Dorothy and Frederick Sutherland.  As a teenager he worked as a radio DJ and then after high school enrolled at the University of Toronto where he graduated with a degree in Engineering as well as drama.  He also went on to study drama between 1958 and 1960 in England at the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art.
He originally had plans pf pursuing a career in engineering, however he decide to see if he had any luck as an actor.  He worked briefly with the Toronto Follies in a tour troupe  but did not do much work as a stage actor like most actors started out, instead he went straight to film work taking on small roles in such films as, "Dr. Terror's House of Horrors" (1965) and such television series as, "The Saint" starring Roger Moore and "Court Martial".
Although he never reached a high level of stardom as his career progressed he managed to add over 150 credits to his resume from a number of television shows and films.  A big break came for him when he as chosen last minute to play, Vernon Pinkley in the film, "The Dirty Dozen" (1967) starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan and a host of other great actors which turned out to be a highly successful film.
Soon he was staring such films as, "MASH" (1970), "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) starring Clint Eastwood, "Klute" (1971) co-starring Jane Fonda, "Lady Ice" (1973), "Alien Thunder" (1974), "1900" (1976) and "Animal House" (1978).
He was appearing with such famous actors as Jane Fonda and although he was just as talented, he still could not reach the level of stardom he desired in Hollywood, yet he continued to work on a number of more successful films such as, "Ordinary People" (1980), "Revolution" (1985), "A Dry White Season" (1989) and the very successful, "JFK" (1991).
Up until this point he still had not won an Oscar for any of his roles, but roles continued to be offered to him.  He was seen on the big screen in, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992), "Shadow of the Wolf" (1992), "Disclosure" (1994) starring alongside Michael Douglas and Demi Moore, "Space Cowboys" (2000) and "Cold Mountain" (2003) starring Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger and Jude Law.
He was appearing on the big screen with more top stars such as Marlon Brando, Nicole Kidman, Clint Eastwood and Tommy Lee Jones.  Some of his latest roles have been in, "Fierce People" (2005), "Land of the Blind" (2006), 'Reign Over Me" (2007), "The Con Artist" (2010), "The Eagle" (2011) and soon to release in 2012, "Dawn Rider".
Along with his many successful film roles he has also made a number of television appearances throughout his career such as on, "Great Books", "Commander in Chiefs", "Dirty Sexy Money", "Man in a Suitcase" and "Play of the Week".  He also won an Emmy for his role in the television movie, "Citizen X" (1995) as well as another Emmy nomination for the television miniseries, "Human Trafficking" (2006).
Throughout his lifetime he has married a total of three times.  His first wife was Lois Hardwick whom he wed in 1959 and divorced later in 1966.  He then married Shirley Douglas in 1966 and they had two children together before this marriage also came to an end in 1970.  His third and final time to marry was to Francine Racette in 1990 and they have three children together and remain married today.  His son, Keifer Sutherland followed in his fathers footsteps and also became a successful actor.  Donald currently resides in Santa Monica, California and continues to work in the industry.
