DICK VAN DYKE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
 
Dick Van Dyke was born on December 13th, 1925 in West Plains, Missouri with the birth name Richard Wayne Van Dyke to parents Loren and Hazel Van Dyke.  He has a younger brother, Jerry Van Dyke who also later on pursued a career as an actor.
 
He was raised in Danville, Illinois and after graduating from Danville high school he went on to join the United States Army Air Corps and became a radio announcer and was also given the chance to entertain the troops being a part of the special services.
 
His career in the industry began when he was working as a radio DJ in Danville and then he teamed up with another man and together they formed a comedy duo called, "Eric & Van-The Merry Mutes".  They would tour and perform in various nightclubs and later on television on a local station in Atlanta. 
 
Some of his early television appearances as a comedian were on such shows as, "Chance of a Lifetime" (1954), "The Phil Silvers Show" (1957-1958) and "The Polly Bergen Show".  Soon CBS network took a big interest in him and he signed a seven year contract with them.
 
He was beginning to catch the attention of Broadway and it did not take long before Van Dyke was performing as the lead role in Broadway's production of, "Bye Bye Birdie" which won four Tony Awards one for Van Dyke as, "Best Featured Actor" Tony in 1961.
 
In 1963 a movie was based on the production of, "Bye Bye Birdie" which Van Dyke was cast in.  He then followed with a number of other film roles in such musicals as the Disney classic, "Mary Poppins" (1964), "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968) and "Fitzwilly" (1967).  
 
Along with his film roles he became very popular with his role on the television series, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961-1966) as well as "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1960) and later in his career he also appeared on such series as, "Airwolf", "Matlock", "Golden Girls", "Highway to Heaven", "American Playhouse", "Scrubs", "CBS Library" and "The Carol Burnett Show".
 
For his role on the Dick Van Dyke show he won a total of three Emmy Awards for being the "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series" and then the series won an additional four Emmy Awards for being the, "Outstanding Comedy Series". 
 
As his career progressed other roles he added to his resume were roles in the films, "Some Kind of Nut" (1969), "Cold Turkey" (1971), "Tubby the Tuba" (1976), "The Runner Stumbles" ( 1979) and such television movies as, "The Alan Brady Show" (2003), "Batman: New Times" (2005), "Night at the Museum" (2006) and the three "Murder 1010" television movies in 2007 and 2008.  He also regained a huge amount of popularity when he was cast as a recurring character on the television series, "Diagnosis: Murder" (1993-2002).

Along with his career as a stage, film and television actor, Van Dyke also earned a Grammy Award for his singing performance on the soundtrack for the film, "Mary Popins".   He is also a published author for a book titled, "Faith, Hope and Hilarity: A Child's Eye View of Religion" (1970) and another book titled, "Those Funny Kids: A Treasury of Classroom Laughter".   In the year 2000 he joined a singing group called, "The Vantastix" and has also been honored with the chance to sing the National Anthem at three different Los Angeles Lakers games.  
 
He has married once throughout his lifetime to Margie Willett whom he wed in 1948 and together they had four children before the marriage ended in divorce in 1984.  he did not re-marry but he did live with his long time girlfriend, Michelle Triola until she passed away in 2009.  He has a total of seven grandchildren and many of his family members were also involved in careers in Hollywood such as when his son and grandson appeared on an episode of, 'Diagnosis Murder" along side him.  In 1992 he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
