DIAHANN CARROLL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Diahann Carroll was born on July 17th, 1935 in The Bronx, New York with the birth name Carol Diann Johnson. Her parents were John Johnson and Mabel Faulk Johnson. At the age of six she was already part of the Harlem Church choir and was also already taking voice as well as piano classes. At the age of ten, Carroll won a Metropolitan scholarship to study at New York High School's Music and Art program.
While studying at school she also tried to find work as a model. When she was sixteen years old along with a friend, she auditioned for a talent scout, Arthur Godfrey and won the contest. She was then given the chance to sing on the radio and later in life began finding work in a variety of nightclubs singing live.
Along with pursuing a career in entertainment she earned a college degree from New York University in psychology.
It did not take long before she was also given the chance to appear on Broadway in such musicals as, "House of Flowers". After gaining some more experience as a stage performer, Carroll broke into the film industry.
Some of her early film roles were on, "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Porgy and Bess" (1959), "Paris Blues" (1961). Not limiting herself to film roles she made a return back to stage acting and once again appeared on Broadway in such productions as, "No Strings" (1962) for which she won a Tony Award.
In addition to her film and stage roles she also focused on her music career and recorded such albums as, Diahann Carroll Sings Harold Arlen in 1957 and Diahann Carroll and Andre Previn in 1960.
She loved performing live and continued to make a number of night club performances as well as television guest appearances on such shows as, "Judy Garland", "Dean Martin", "Danny Kaye's" and Carol Burnett" on their musical variety shows.
In the late 60's she won a Golden Globe Award for, 'Best Newcomer' as well as an Emmy nomination for her role in, "Julia" (1968). Although being an African American actress had made times hard for her to reach the level of stardom she had hoped for, it was her role in this series that helped boost her career and also her role on the primetime soap opera "Dynasty" (1984-1987) also starring John Forsythe, Joan Collins and Linda Evans.
She now returned back to working on films appearing on the big screen in such features as, "Claudine" (1974) and the television movie, "Star Wars Holiday Special" (1978) and "Sister, Sister" (1982).
Diahann also had a number of guest appearances back on television in such series as, "The Love Boat" (1977), "Roots: The Next Generations" (1979) , "Dynasty" (1981) and "The Colbys" (1986).
As her career progressed she never limited herself to one aspect of entertainment. She returned to the stage occasionally, continued appearing in films, television and even toured with her husband who was singer, Vic Damone.
Some of her more recent roles have been on the television series, "The Court" (2002), "Strong Medicine' 92003), "Whoopi" (2003), "Grey's Anatomy" (2006-2007), "Diary of a Single Mom" (2010), "White Collar" (2009-2011) and the television movies, "At Risk" (2010) and "The Front" (2010). Soon to release in 2013 is her latest film role, "We the Peeples".
Carroll has married four times throughout her lifetime. Her first husband was Monte Kay whom she wed in 1956 and they had one child together before the marriage came to an end in 1963. She then married Frederick Jack Glusman in February 1973 but this marriage only lasted until July 1973. Her third marriage was to Robert DeLeon in 1975 and they were together until he passed away on 1977. She then married Vic Damone in 1987 and again by 1996 this marriage had also come to an end.
Although she has had a very successful career and overcome many of the racial barriers of being an African American female actress. She has also proved to be a fighter with being a breast cancer survivor and was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contribution to recording.
