DANNY DEVITO BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Danny DeVito was born on November 17th, 1944 in Asbury Park, New Jersey with the birth name Daniel Michael DeVito Jr. His parents were Julia and Daniel Sr. He was raised in Asbury Park and received his early years education at a number of private schools.
When he graduated from high school, he first found work in his sister's beauty salon. After working for about one year, DeVito decided to enroll at New York's Academy of Dramatic Arts originally with the goal of learning more about cosmetology. However, while studying at the school, he became very interested in acting and decided to change his career goals and pursue a career in entertainment.
In the early 60's, he relocated to Los Angeles, California and in 1966 he earned a degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
He first had a chance to see what the film industry was all about when he was cast in the film, "Dreams of Glass" (1970). However, after this initial experience, he became unhappy with the film industry in Hollywood and chose to focus on working as a stage actor.
His Broadway debut was in 1969 in a production of, "The Man With the Flower in His Mouth" followed by roles in, "The Shrinking Bride" and "Lady Liberty". In 1979, DeVito was offered a role in the film, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" starring Jack Nicholson, which turned out to be a highly successful film, however it did not do anything to jump start DeVito's career.
It took a while, but finally in 1978 he got his big break when he was cast in a television series called, "Taxi" which aired from 1978 through 1983. For his role in this series he won an Emmy Award and was nominated for three others.
Finally, he had caught the attention of Hollywood and he began to appear on the big screen in such films as, "Romancing the Stone" (1984) starring Michael Douglas, "Ruthless People" (1986), "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987), "Twins" (1988), "Batman Returns" (1992), "Space Jam" (1996) starring Michael Jordan and "Matilda' (1996).
Along with now having a name for himself in Hollywood as an actor, he was also given the opportunity to work as a director on such films as, "The War of the Roses" (1989) and "Hoffa" (1992).
In addition along with his wife, Rhea they co-founded, Jersey Films and produced a number of films as well as television shows such as, "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "Get Shorty" (1995), "Man of the Moon" (1999) and "Erin Brockovich" (2000) starring Julia Roberts. He is also co-owner of a restaurant, called DeVito in South Beach Florida.
DeVito has married only one time to Rhea Perlman in 1982 and they have three children and remain married today. He currently owns property in Los Angeles and Malibu, California and owns a vacation home in Interlaken, New Jersey.
He was inducted into the 2010 New Jersey Hall of Fame for his services and contributions to Arts and Entertainment. DeVito is also a supporter of the OneVoice Movement which is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to help the Israelis and Palestinians resolve the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
