CRAIG STEVENS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Craig Stevens was born on July 8th, 1918 in Liberty Missouri with the birth name Gail Shikles Jr.  When he completed High School his original intentions were to pursue a career in dentistry and was studying at Kansas University where he began performing in school productions and realized he had an interest in acting.  After graduating in 1936 he chose not to pursue his masters in dentistry but instead to take a chance at acting.

He left school and moved out to California to see if he had a chance of making something of himself in the entertainment industry.  He was cast in two small films in 1939, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Coast Guard" then in 1941 he was signed to a contract by Warner Brothers Studios.

Some of his film work were in such pictures as, "The Deadly Mantis" (1957), and his most well known role was in 1958 portraying the character, private detective, Peter Gunn on the NBC television series, "Peter Gunn" which later was also made into a feature film in 1967.

He never reached a highly successful level of stardom, however he did manage to stay employed in films as well as television and was able to financially support his family on his income from acting.

Some of his other guest television appearances were on such series as, "Dallas" (1978), "Man of the World" (1962), "Mr. Adam and Eve", "State Trooper", "The Love Boat", "Fantasy Island" and "Murder, She Wrote".

Along with a decent film and television resume, Stevens also had numerous stage experience on such productions as, "Plain and Fancy", "Cactus Flower" and "My Fair Lady".

Craig Stevens married only one time to Alexis Smith whom he wed in 1944 and they remained together without having any children until she passed away on June 9th, 1993.  Just a couple years later at the age of eighty one, Stevens passed away on May 10th, 2000 in Los Angeles, California from cancer.
