Being raised in Hollywood and well accustomed to the exposure of the entertainment industry, Bernsen actually did not intend to pursue a career in the industry. After he earned his high school diploma from Beverly Hills High School he went on to study at the UCLA originally with a goal to pursue a career in law. However, after spending some time studying law he switched majors and graduated with a BFA in Theatre Arts and an MFA in Playwriting.
Bernsen then began to find work in Los Angeles as a set designer and also received some acting roles beginning with a bit part in "Clambake" (1967) starring Elvis Presley, Shelley Fabares, Bill Bixby, Will Hutchins, Gary Merrill and James Gregory. His first major film role was in 1974 in, "Three the Hard Way" starring Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, Jim Kelly and Alex Rocco. He then relocated to New York City, found work as a model, continued to pursue acting but also supported himself working as a carpenter and roofer.
Soon he began to get cast in better roles such as on the television soap opera, "Ryan's Hope" (1975) and he was also given a chance to host, "Saturday Night Live" in 1975. Jackson.
Along with working as a film actor, he gained a large amount of popularity with his role on the television series, "L.A. Law" (1986) and later also made appearances on such soap opera's as, "General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless".
