Conrad Nagel ACTOR

Conrad Nagel was born on March 16th, 1897 in Keokuk, Iowa to parents Frank and Frances, both of whom were involved in music.  He lost his mother when he was quite young and so at the age of three his father relocated to Des Moines, Iowa.
Nagel attended college at Highland Park College in Des Moines and after completing his education he decided to relocate to California and see what type of job he could find within the motion picture industry.
Hollywood executives took to him right away with his handsome appearance and athletic frame they felt he had the all American charm that would appeal to most viewers.  His film debut was in 1918 in the silent film, "Little Women" followed by a role in the film, "The Fighting Chance" (1920) and "London After Midnight" (1927).
The transition from silent films to the sound era was no issue for Nagel at all.  He was cast in a number of films and also made numerous radio appearances.  He was also a host of such television shows as, "Silver Theater" (1937-1947), "Celebrity Time" (1949-1952) and in 1930 he hosted the Emmy Awards.
Nagel married three times throughout his life time.  His first wife was Ruth Helms whom he wed on June 24th, 1924 and had one daughter, Ruth Margaret before divorcing in 1935.  His second wife was Lynn Merrick who he married in 1945 for just a short time.  His third time to marry was to Michael Coulson Smith in 1955 and together they also had one child, Michael.
Conrad Nagel passed away on February 24th, 1970 in New York City, New York at the age of seventy two and was cremated at Garden State Crematory in North Bergen, New Jersey.  His remains are interred at the Lutheran Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois.
He was awarded three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to Radio, Television and Motion Pictures.  He is also remembered as one of thirty five other film industry people who helped found the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and also served as President of the organization from 1932 to 1933.  Nagel was also involved as being a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
