CHARLES MARTIN SMITH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Charles Martin Smith was born on October 30th, 1953 in Van Nuys, California. His interest in performing began during his schooling years. He would perform in local productions at school and it was there that a Los Angeles talent scout took notice of him when he appeared in the play, "Man of La Mancha".
After high school, he went on to earn a degree in Theater from California State University. He then began searching for work as an actor and soon was appearing on such television series as, "The Brady Bunch" and "Room 222" in the early 1970's and his break through role came with the 1973 film, "American Graffiti" starring Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Wolfman Jack, Paul Le Mat, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins, Kathleen Quinlan, Kay Lenz and Suzanne Somers, where he portrayed Terry 'The Toad' Fields.
Now he was beginning to make a name for himself in Hollywood and soon Smith was appearing in more prominent film roles such as, "The Buddy Holly Story" (1978) starring with Gary Busey and Don Stroud, "Never Cry Wolf" (1983) with Brian Dennehy, "Starman" (1984) also starring Jeff Bridges, Karen Allen and Richard Jaeckel, "The Untouchables" (1987) starring alongside Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia and Robert De Niro, "Speechless" (1994) starring with Michael Keaton, Bonnie Bedelia, Ernie Hudson and Christopher Reeve and "I Love Trouble" (1994) starring Julia Roberts, Nick Nolte, Robert Loggia, Olympia Dukakis, James Rebhorn and Marsha Mason.
In addition to film work, Smith began to be a highly recognized face on television appearing in a variety of series such as, "The Rookies", "Lucas Tanner", "Baretta", "Tales From the Crypt", "Picket Fences", "Northern Exposure", "The Outer Limits" and "Family Law".
Along with working as a actor, he has also worked on the other side of the industry as a director. Smith started in 1986 directing the film, "Trick or Treat" and since then has also worked as a director on other projects such as the film, "Air Bud" (1997) and the television series, "Space: Above and Beyond", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Da Vinci's Inquest" and "Da Vinci's City Hall". Smith also wrote and directed the film, "The Snow Walker" in 2003 and then, "Stone of Destiny" in 2008, which was nominated for Best Picture and lastly "Dolphin Tale" (2011) starring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff.
Most recently, Smith has appeared in the films, "Lucky You" (2007) starring Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, Debra Messing, Jean Smart, Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, "Jack and Jill vs. the World" (2009) Freddie Prinze Jr., Taryn Manning and Robert Forster and the television series, "Fringe" and "Psych". He was married only once briefly to Ursula Martin and they had one child together before the marriage came to an end. Smith currently lives in Canada and continues to be involved in the industry as an actor, director and writer.
