CANDICE BERGEN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Candice Bergen was born on May 9th, 1946 in Beverly Hills, California with the birth name Candice Patricia Bergen to parents Frances and Edgar Bergen. Her father worked as a ventriloquist, comedian and actor and as a child she was always referred to as Charlie McCarthy’s little sister, who was her fathers “dummy”.
She went to school at Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles followed by the Cathedral School in Washington D.C. and then abroad to Montesano finishing school in Switzerland. She had a passion for photography, modeling and fashion, originally having goals of being a fashion designer.
Since her father was already involved in the entertainment industry, she would appear on his radio program and at the age of eleven was seen on, “You Bet Your Life” (1958). By 1966, she was working as an actress making her screen debut on, “The Group” followed by roles in, “The Sand Pebbles” (1966) starring Steve McQueen and Richard Crenna, “Live for Life” (1967), “The Magnus” (1968) and “The Adventures” (1970).
Even though her career continued with roles in such films as, “Carnal Knowledge” (1971) and “The Wind and the Lion” (1975), she was mostly cast in unmemorable film roles such as, “A Night of Full Rain” (1978) and “Oliver’s Story” (1978).
She turned to working as a stage actress in 1985 hoping she might have more success. She made her Broadway debut on, “Hurly Burly”. Finally, in 1988 she was cast in the role that made her career on the television series, “Murphy Brown” which lasted ten seasons and earned her five Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards.
Her career was now heading in the right direction and she returned back to the big screen with roles on such films as, “Miss Congeniality” (2000), “Sweet Home Alabama” (2002), “In-Laws” (2003), “Sex and the City” (2003), “Bride Wars’ (2009) and for five seasons she was also cast in a recurring role on, “Boston Legal” (2005).
Other guest roles have been on such television shows as, “Seinfeld”, “Law & Order”, “Family Guy”, “Will & Grace” and an occasional role on, “House” (2011).
Bergen has married twice throughout her lifetime. Her first husband was Louis Malle whom she married in 1980 and they had one child and remained together until he passed away on November 23rd, 1995. She then married her current husband, Marshall Rose in 2000.
