C. AUBREY SMITH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

C. Aubrey Smith was born on July 21st, 1883 in London, England with the birth name Charles Aubrey Smith.  After high school, he went on to earn a degree from Cambridge University.  He first relocated to South Africa between 1888-1889 to mind for gold and it was not until he was thirty years old that he decided to pursue a career as an actor, beginning as a stage actor.
 
He gained over twenty years experience as a stage actor before even attempting to enter the film industry.  Some of his stage credits included, "The Prisoner of Zenda" and on Broadway in, "Pygmalion".   
 
By the age of fifty he began appearing in small parts on a number of silent films such as, "John Glayde's Honor" and "The Builder of Bridges" (both 1915).
 
He did not make his real mark on the industry until the 1930's when sound films came about.  Some of his more prominent roles included, "Wee Willie Winkie" (1937) starring Shirley Temple, "The Four Feathers" (1939) co-starring John Clements, Ralph Richardson and June Duprez, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941) starring Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman, "And Then There Were None" (1945) starring Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston and "Unconquered" (1947) starring Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard.
 
In addition to making a name for himself as an actor, he was also a cricketer when he played during college.  In 1932, he founded the Hollywood Cricket Club. 
 
Smith was on the first board of the Screen Actors Guild in 1933 and received the Order of the British Empire in 1938 and in 1944, he was knighted.  He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.    
 
C. Aubrey Smith married only once to Isabelle Wood and together they had one child.  He remained working as an actor up until he passed away on December 20th, 1948 in Beverly Hills, California after suffering from pneumonia.  His remains were cremated and his ashes sent back to England and interred in his mother's grave at St. Leonard's Churchyard in Hove, East Sussex.
