BRUCE BENNETT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Bruce Bennett was born on May 19th, 1906 in Tacoma, Washington with the birth name Harold Herman Brix. He was the fourth child out of five total born to parents who immigrated from Germany to the United States. Bennett first became very interested in athletics and after high school he went on to study at the University of Washington where he studied economics and also excelled in football. He was also very involved in track and field and actually won the Silver Medal for shot-putting in the 1928 Olympic Games.
After being asked to compete for the Los Angeles Athletics Club, Bennett decided to relocate to California. It was when he became friends with actor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. that his new found friend convinced him to go for a screen test with Paramount Pictures.
He was the original first choice to play Tarzan in, "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932) however he lost out on the role when he suffered a shoulder injury during filming of, "Touchdown" (1931). It did not take too long for Bennett to be chosen for an independent film, "The New Adventures of Tarzan" (1935). When he took on this role he was being credited under the stage name, Herman Brix. This was a serial and the only Tarzan film that represented the character correctly. Other roles that followed were few such as in, "Hawk of the Wilderness" (1938), but otherwise he found himself being very typecast and was unable to find any work.
He decided to take a break from acting, study acting and then changed his stage name to Bruce Bennett. This was the best career choice he could have made as upon his return to the industry, film roles came easy to him. He became a member of Columbia Stock Company.
He again took a brief break from acting to serve in the military during World War II. Upon coming back to work as an actor, Bennett was seen on the big screen in such films as, "Sahara" (1943) starring Humphrey Bogart, "Mildred Pierce" (1945) starring Joan Crawford, "Nora Prentiss" (1947), "Dark Passage" (1947), "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) starring Humphrey Bogart and John Huston, "Mystery Street" (1950), "Sudden Fear" (1952) and "Strategic Air Command" (1955) starring James Stewart.
After appearing in two more films in the late 50's, "The Alligator People" (1959) and "Fiend of Dope Island" (1961), he retired completely from the industry and found work as a sales manager for a vending machine company.
Bennett was married only once to Jeannette C. Braddock whom he wed in 1933 and they remained married until she passed away on June 30th, 2000. They had two children together, Christopher and Christina, and seven years later Bruce Bennett passed away on February 24th, 2007 in Santa Monica, California after suffering from complications from a broken hip.
