At the age of forty three, the film industry took interest in Bondi and she was cast in her film debut, "Street Scene" (1931) adapted from the play version.  As her career progressed she continued to work as a stage actress on Broadway while pursuing film roles.

Some of her more well known film roles were in, "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" (1936), "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939), "Our Town" (1940), "Penny Serenade" (1941) and "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946).  She also won two Best Supporting Actress nominations for her roles in the films, "The Gorgeous Hussy" (1936) and "Of Human Hearts" (1938).

Along with a successful stage and film career, she also made a number of television appearances on such series as, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Goodyear Television Playhouse" and in 1976 she won an Emmy Award for her role on the program, "The Waltons".
