BERNADETTE PETERS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Bernadette Peters was born on February 28th, 1948 in Queens, New York with the birth name Bernadette Lazzara. She was the youngest of three children born to Peter and Marguerite Peters and she grew up to have a career as a children's author, singer and actress.
Her career began as a child actress appearing on such television shows as, "All in the Family", "Maude" and "McCloud" and several times on "The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour" when she was only five years old. She was also performing on stage as a child actress and then as she became a teenager she studied at the Quintano's School for Young Professionals and she began to get television as well as film roles. Some of her earlier career roles were in, "The Muppet Show" and "The Carol Burnett Show".
She was also seen on the big screen in such films as, "Silent Movie" (1976), "The Jerk" (1979) and "Pennies from Heaven" (1981). In total she appeared in thirty two feature films and television movies among them such as "Pink Cadillac" (1989) starring alongside of Clint Eastwood.
Some other television shows she has been involved with are, "Saturday Night Live", "Ally McBeal", "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", "Will & Grace", "Law & Order", "Grey's Anatomy", "Boston Legal" and "Ugly Betty".
Bernadette had a very successful career as an off-Broadway stage actress first appearing in such productions as, "The Sound of Music", "The Penny Friend" and "Curly McDimple". Her Broadway debut was in 1967 in, "Johnny No-Trump" followed by other successful plays as, "Mack and Mabel", "Sunday in the Park with George", "Song and Dance", "Into the Woods" and "Annie Get Your Gun".
Peters later returned to her love of stage performing appearing in more successful productions such as, "The Goodbye Girl", "Gypsy", "A Little Night Music" and in 2011 she reprised her role of Sally in, "Follies".
Along with her film, television and stage career she is also a talented vocalist and has recorded a total of six solo albums and performed a number of live concerts. Three of her albums have received Grammy Award nominations. Some of her songs are, "Heartquake", "Only Wounded", "Chico's Girl", "Pearl's a Singer" and "You'll Never Know".
Peters has also recorded songs on a number of other albums such as, "Dublin Lady", "Flirting with the Edge", "Dress Casual" and "Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins".
She has earned numerous awards during the course of her career. She has earned a total of seven Tony Award nominations for which she won two and won three of her eight nominations for a Drama Desk Award. She has also received three Emmy Award nominations and three Golden Globe Award nominations for which she has won one. She was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame for live theater and has received the Actors' Fund Artistic Achievement Medal in 1999. Finally she was also inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame.
In addition, Peters is a well known children's book author. She co-founded, Broadway Barks which helps raise money to support animal adoptions. Her two children books, "Broadway Barks" and "Stella is a Star" were both very successful.
Throughout her lifetime she has married only once to Michael Wittenberg whom she wed in 1996 and they remained together until he passed away in 2005 in a helicopter crash while on a business trip.
Bernadette also dedicates a large amount of her time to a number of charitable causes such as serving on the Board of Trustees of Broadway Cares, Equity Fights AIDS and is also a member of the Board of Directors of Standing Tall which is a non profit educational program that offers programs for children suffering from various disabilities.
