BEN GAZZARA BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Ben Gazzara was born on August 28th, 1930 in New York City, New York with the birth name Biagio Anthony Gazzara.  He first became interested in a career as an actor when he saw the stage production of, "The Glass Menagerie".

After graduating from Stuyvesant High School he went onto study engineering, but finally dropped out when he received an acting scholarship.  Gazzara then joined the Actor's Studio and was cast as the lead in, "End as a Man" which soon went to Broadway and won Gazzara a Theatre World Award.  This role followed with a number of other roles in such productions as, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1955) and "Hatful of Rain" (1955).

In 1957 he made his film debut in, "The Strange One" also starring Pat Hingle, Peter Mark Richman and George Peppard, which was the film version from the play he did, "End as a Man".  In 1959 he was cast in the film, "Anatomy of a Murder" which turned out to be a commercial success and it also starred James Stewart, Lee Remick, Arthur O'Connell, Kathryn Grant, George C. Scott, Murray Hamilton, John Qualen, Duke Ellington, Orson Bean and Eve Arden

After a couple more films roles such as, "The Young Doctors" (1962) starring alongside Fredric March, Dick Clark, Ina Balin, Eddie Albert, Phyllis Love, Aline MacMahon, George Segal and Dolph Sweet and which was narrated by Ronald Reagan and "Convicts" (1962) co-starring Stuart Whitman, Ray Walston, Rod Steiger, Broderick Crawford, Vincent Price, Dodie Stevens, Sammy Davis Jr. and Jack Albertson, he was not seeing his film career having much success so he turned to working as a television actor.

Some of his television appearances included, "Arrest and Trial" (1963) and "Run for Your Life" (1965).  Ben soon made a huge film comeback when he was cast in three John Cassavetes films in the seventies, "Husbands" (1970) written, directed and starring John Cassavetes and with Peter Falk and Jenny Runacre, "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie" (1976) with Morgan Woodward and Timothy Carey and "Opening Night" (1977) also written, directed and starring John Cassavetes along with Gena Rowlands, Paul Stewart, Zohra Lampert and Joan Blondell.

He did continue to work on a number of other films, none as successful as the Cassavetes films.  However he did have the lead role in the film, "Saint Jack" (1979) with Lisa Lu, George Lazenby, Peter Bogdanovich and Denholm Elliott, and also worked on two television movies, "The Death of Richie" (1977) starring with Robbie Benson, Eileen Brennan and Lance Kerwin and "An Early Frost" (1985) co-starring Aidan Quinn, Gena Rowlands, Sylvia Sidney, Terry O'Quinn and Bill Paxton, portraying the father of a child suffering from AIDS.

In 1989 Ben also starred in what has become sort of a cult classic action film "Road House" along with Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott, Kevin Tighe, Jeff Healey, Kelly Lynch, Red West and Marshall Teague in which he becomes the man everyone loves to hate.

As his career entered the 90's he worked harder then he had all his years.  In total he appeared in thirty eight films just in the 90's alone.  The Big Screen films consisted of roles in, "The Spanish Prisoner" (1997)also starring Campbell Scott, Steve Martin, Rebecca Pidgeon, Ricky Jay and Felicity Huffman, "The Big Lebowski" (1998) starring Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, Tara Reid, John Turturro and Sam Elliott, who also narrates the film, "Happiness" (1998) and "Summer of Sam" (1999) co-starring John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino, Jennifer Esposito, Spike Lee, Bebe Neuwirth and Anthony LaPaglia.

He would often alternate between film, television and stage work not only as an actor but also as a director.  He directed some episodes on the series, "Run for Your Life" (1965) and "The Name of the Game" (1968).  He also wrote and directed the film called, "Beyond the Ocean" (1990) however, this film has still not been released to the public.

Gazzara continues to work today and has worked with some of the most prominent directors in the industry.  Ben is currently married to Elke Stuckmann whom is his third wife.  They married in 1982.  He was married twice before, first to Louise Erickson from 1951 thorough 1957.  His second wife was the only one to have a child with was Janice Rule whom he wed in 1961 and they had one daughter, Elizabeth before ending the marriage in January 1982.

In 1999, Gazzara was diagnosed with throat cancer but continues to work as an actor today with three projects currently in post production.
