BARTON MACLANE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Barton Maclane was born on December 25th, 1902 in Columbia, South Carolina with the birth name Ernest Barton MacLane. Upon completing High School, he attended Wesleyan University where he excelled in sports, especially football. When he graduated from college he got into the film industry to mostly at first to his strength and physical appearance. He worked on the film, "The Quarterback" (1926).
He then went to get some formal acting training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and then joined a local stock company. Barton finally got a chance to work on Broadway in the production, "The Trial of Mary Dugan" (1927) followed by an appearance in, "Subway Express" (1929-1930).
When Maclane decided to see if he could write a script for the stage he completed the play, "Rendezvous" (1932) which survived a total of twenty one performances before closing down. This did however, open a door for him with a contract with Warner Brothers.
In 1935 he worked on the film, "G-Men" which showed the type of characters he was best at portraying. Again it was his physique and a rasping voice that made him great for western films and to work on the types of films Warner Brothers was known for.
His film career continued with roles on such films as, "Bullets or Ballots" (1938), "Western Union" (1941), "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) and "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" (1950) amongst many others.
Along with a highly successful film career he also became involved as working as a television actor and was actually able to avoid his type cast film actor style for a completely different role on NBC's, "The Outlaws" as a good guy Marshall Frank Caine. Barton also made an appearance on, "I Dream of Jeanie" (1965-1969) as General Peterson, a role he is still very well known for today. He appeared in a total of thirty five episodes, three of which actually aired after he passed away.
He proved him self to have a number of different talents and he excelled at anything he did whether it be football in college, stag, television or film acting, play writing and even an accomplished musician playing a number of instruments.
When he was not working on a set he opened a cattle ranch in Madera County California. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the television industry.
Barton Maclane married twice throughout his lifetime. His first marriage was to Martha Stewart with whom he had two children. After his divorce from her he married Charlotte Wynters in 1939 and they remained together until he passed away on January 1st, 1969 in Santa Monica, California from cancer. He is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Burbank, California.
