BARRY FITZGERALD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
 
Barry Fitzgerald was born on March 10th, 1888 in Dublin, Ireland with the birth name William Joseph Shields.  He went to school with the intention of having a career as a banker, however he also had an interest in acting and in 1920 he changed his career direction and joined Dublin's world-famous Abbey Players.  His younger brother, Arthur Shields, followed in his footsteps and also became a working actor. 
 
He also found work on other stage productions such as, "Juno and The Paycock" which he later had the opportunity to recreate the role in Alfred Hitckcock's film version in the 1930's.  He also starred in the play, "The Silver Tassie". 
 
Fitzgerald soon relocated to Los Angeles to star in a film by the famed director John Ford, "The Plough and the Stars" (1936) followed by excellent performances in, "The Long Voyage Home" (1940), "How Green Was My Valley" (1941), "None But the Lonely Heart" (1944) and "Going My Way" (1944) for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the same performance.  As he came closer to the end of his career he starred in two more films, "And Then There Were None" (1945) and "The Quiet Man" (1952) filmed enterily on location in County Mayo, Ireland starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara which is one of his most well known roles.
 
In 1959, he returned to his homeland in Ireland and on January 14th, 1961 Barry Fitzgerald passed away in Dublin, Ireland from a heart attack.  Barry was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to film and television.
