ANN TODD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Ann Todd was born on January 24th, 1909 in Cheshire, England. She developed an interest in the art of performing from a fairly young age and later studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Soon she began appearing in a number of stage productions and then along with stage work, Todd began to break into the film industry in the early 1930's.
She began with appearing in such films as, "Keepers of Youth" (1931) with Garry Marsh and Robin Irvine, "These Charming People" (1931) starring Cyril Maude, Godfrey Tearle and Nora Swinburne, "The Ghost Train" (1931) with Jack Hulbert and Cicely Courtneidge, "The Water Gipsies" (1932) and H.G. Wells' "Things to Come" (1936) starring Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson, Cedric Hardwicke, Pearl Argyle and Margaretta Scott.
Some of her more well known roles included, "The Seventh Veil" (1945) starring with James Mason and Herbert Lom, Alfred Hitchcock's "The Paradine Case" (1947) starring alongside Gregory Peck, Alida Valli, Charles Laughton, Charles Coburn, Ethel Barrymore Leo G. Carroll and Louis Jourdan, "One Woman's Story" (1949) with Claude Rains and Trevor Howard, "Madeleine" (1950) co-starring Ivan Desny, Leslie Banks and Norman Wooland, "Breaking the Sound Barrier" (1952) also starring Ralph Richardson, John Justin, Nigel Patrick and Denholm Elliott and "Time Without Pity" (1957) starring Michael Redgrave and Leo McKern.
Along with working as an actress she also enjoyed writing and would create travel documentation as a part time career in the 50's. During this time she also began to take on more work as a television actress and appeared on Broadway in 1957 in, "Four Winds".
Other well known television credits included, "Climax!", "After Hours", "Playhouse 90", "Thriller", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Love Story", "The Man Outside", "The United States Steel Hour", "Screen Two" and "Maigret".
Ann Todd married three times throughout her lifetime, first to Victor Malcolm very briefly and after having one child this marriage came to an end. She then wed Nigel Tangye in 1945 and they also had one child before the marriage ended in 1949. Her third marriage was to director David Lean in 1949 and they stayed together until 1957. She then chose not to marry again and on May 6th, 1993, Todd passed away in London, England after suffering from a stroke at the age of eighty four.
