ALEXIS SMITH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Alexis Smith was born on June 8th, 1921 in Penticton, British Columbia in Canada with the birth name Gladys Smith. As a young girl she was involved in taking ballet lessons and after completing High School she went to college at Los Angeles City College where she earned a degree in drama.
In 1941 a scout from Warner Brothers saw her in a production and signed her to a contract. She worked with some of the best male talent in Hollywood such as Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Errol Flynn and Bing Crosby.
Alexis was not only admired for her beauty but she was one of the few female actresses during this era that was given the opportunity to show she had a talent for acting as well. She was also well admired for her professional mannerisms on set and was very easy to get along with and liked by all.
Some of her more well known film work included roles on, "Dive Bomber" (1941), "Gentleman Jim" (1942), "The Constant Nymph" (1943), "Night and Day" (1946), "Conflict" (1944), "The Two Mrs. Carrolls'" (1947) and "Any Number Can Play" (1949).
She also worked on a number of films that did not fare so well with critics such as her role in the films, "The Woman in White" (1948), "Here Comes the Groom" (1951) and "The Turning Point" (1952).
Along with working as a film actress, Smith also worked on stage with her husband actor, Craig Stevens whom she remained with for forty nine years. They appeared together in, "Critics Choice", "Cactus Flower" and "Mary, Mary". She also earned a Tony Award for her stage role in, "Follies" (1971) and earned another Tony Award nomination for her leading role as Lila Halliday in, "Platinum" (1979).
Smith also made a number of television appearances such as a recurring role on, "Dallas" and received a Emmy nomination for her guest appearance on, "Cheers". She never had any children and lived with her husband Craig Stevens in West Hollywood. Alexis Smith passed away on June 9th, 1993 after suffering from brain cancer.
